    Lowest effort crops

Have some land too far away, Trying to sell it.

I might need to run another year of crop on there.

Is there a crop that is basically seed it and forget it until harvest?

Yup...its called rent-it-out. Someone else does it all.
Then offer to sell it to the tenant. Are you able to replace it with something closer to home?

Hmmm...rent it out. I thought nobody pays their rent anymore?

Yes, I have replaced it already with something closer to home, looking forward to it this year.

Have you thought about just greenfeeding it and advertising it as such.

It's a beautiful winter but there could be guys looking for hay.

Cows still grazing are saving hay for sure but unless it rains first off they may be short pasture earlier than they realize.

I thought farmers will chase land for miles!! I have never done that and will never start.

All you have to do is put an add in a local paper and the farmers who feel the property will fit for them will rent it. These days it doesnt take long for a farmer to plant and harvest an extra section. Then you dont have to worry about farming it yourself.

Also, it's like a crack addiction....let them farm it for a couple of years and they won't want to give it up!

Besides, the lowest effort crops are the lowest margin crops.

Whenever you actually can replace outlying land with land closer the land market is falling not rising as you are aware. Time to cut the price and get on with it before others figure this out. You probably had the idea that you could make money on this transaction. Going to check out some free rent land today. It will not be pretty but will see if the price is too much. Unfortunately the existence of this parcel makes means the value of mine is likely softening.

I think you should farm it. 2016 could be a big year. I don't know the cropping history but hemp might work as it requires little once established. Also, I've seen flax handled that way and it has worked out well.

What about owning it and seeding it to forage? Hay could become more valuable than it is now.

There is a lot of 2014 and 2015 hemp crop in bins so that is why Manitoba harvest is not contracting this year so that would not be a viable option. Round bales of cow hay can still be had in AB for $80 so the shortage of hay was greatly exaggerated. There are always the hoarders for $250 a bale but that is not the market. Bottom line is that we need a drought (somewhere else of course) this year in order to tighten the supply of commodities. Better get the land sold.

BTO....Things grow so good in the land of unicorns, fairy dust and utopian gratitude(read Killam) that $130/ac is a deal, especially for value-added seed growing....aided by UPOV91 to keep us hillbillies from buying my neighbor's year off certified seed...
