    Seeding

Heard rumours today that someone started seeding spring wheat yesterday east of Lethbridge. Heard another one that colonies are getting ready to start next week

The prairies are an amazing place. Over here we have had one day above plus two. The next few days are supposed to be plus 5-7, but then minus highs again. Hard to warm up white, snow covered ground.

      Crazy.

I think it was 2012 some guys here seeded on St. Patrick's Day. They said they'd never do that again. Everyone else had massive crops. Early seeded was less than so so.

          Mid April works here.

No one in their right mind(can't speak for the minds that left though) would seed in March....

Last year we started with peas the 28th of April and started canola May 4 that was too early for the canola...as it got frosted pretty good. But you never know... hindsight is always good.

If you wait too long with a dry spring you run the risk of the ground drying too much. Too early and frost
is an issue. Seldom is it ever "perfect".

Roll the dice, but roll them against something that gives you the best odds, lots of money at stake.

At least there is lots of time to reseed if it doesn't make it.
Doesn't crop insurance have a reseeding benefit that will cover part or all of that cost?

Will this decision result in re-seeding in April?

Seed early, seed often! Get more practice to make you perfect?
Going to RAIN 4 days next week, we will be screwed again in 2016.
Roads will go to hell, a swamp last fall. Creeks running under snow.
Oh it's SO terrible to be dry, check where it's flooded and be thankful.

Yes, it's true, spring wheat seeded yesterday. These farmers always try to get some wheat seeded really early, and I have never seen them have a wreak yet. Probably 3 years out of the last 10 they have seeded spring wheat in March. This might be the earliest they have been out, though. A few years ago, they got a lot of acres seeded around March 20. Then we had 3 weeks of winter. That early wheat was as good as wheat seeded mid April, when everyone else started.

Ice has been off of the dugouts for a week now. Yesterday was 21. Gophers have been out for over a month. Grass is getting green, weeds are growing, tulips will be blooming next week. Looks like mid April.

Wow! That is amazing. Yesterday was the last good run for snowmobiling. Big melt today. I can be done but it will get rough and hard on sleds.

Pull out the quad and go mudding. A little accumulation of water in potholes but may go away when the frost comes out.

Fields totally covered with snow here. I just heard the 6:00 A.M. news and weather. Saskatoon 4. Here -4. Just over 100 km apart.
