There's a lot of bitching on here about Sask highways, Sask government, etc. etc....
I moved here from MB 5 years ago... Here's a few observations:
1. Highways: SK has more miles of pavement, and MORE miles of improved pavement between #1 and #16 than MB has in the ENTIRE province.
2. Interchanges: The connection between Highway 16, and Highway 1 in Manitoba is a stop light. No. Seriously. A stop light. Sk has interchanges EVERYWHERE. Look at #10 and #1 for instance... #6 and ring road... list goes on...
3. Shoulders... MB has in the last 2 years figured out you can save on windshield payments if you pave shoulders.... SK highways are wider, and on top of that most have paved shoulders and rumble strips...
4. Yes there are poor highways here, but if you think the worst one here is bad, I invite you to go down #367 in Manitoba.
5.Government waste... Well, this list is so long in Manitoba it isn't even funny....
6. BiopoleIII... Run a power line through a route twice as long to keep it out of a forest because the moose might object to a power line....
7. Infrastructure in general... SK puts more money into real world infrastructure projects in 1 year than MB did in a decade...
8. Winnipegities... here in SK you get the feeling you're as important in Humboldt, SK as you are in Regina SK. In Manitoba, if you live outside of the Perimeter highway f*** you.
9. Work ethic.... Something that struck me as soon as I moved west... people here work. When it's time to go it's time to go. Highways here get built rapidly... What takes a year for MB highways takes a month here.
10. Industry: Potash mines, oilfields, uranium mines, canola crushers, flour mills They've gotten built, expanded, and improved. Sask has 5 canola crushers. Manitoba has 2. 1 of which was built right on the border in the days where MB was Conservative and SK NDP. Should tell ya something right there
11. SGI vs. MPI... Vehicle insurance here is way cheaper than in Manitoba, way more business/farm friendly, and way more efficient.
12. Energy: Natural gas is ultra expensive and almost unheard of north of #16 in MB... Here, pretty much every house rural or urban is hooked up to nat gas.
13. Power... MB Hydro used to be cheaper... but considering heating in rural Mb is mostly electric, vs. gas here the total bill here is less.
14. Crop insurance... SK's system is way above MBs even though lots of guys here bitch. Higher coverage, higher yields, lower premiums.
15. SK in this current slowdown is "booming" compared to going to Manitoba. There's still an energy when you go to S'toon or Regina, Manitoba just feels dead. People are depressed... There's no pride like there used to be...
Just thought Id' throw that out there.... lots of people complain, but you can't forget that it can be MUCH worse in other places....
Again, these are my observations from having lived in MB for ~20 years and then moving west.
Oh yeah, and it looks like the NDP will get destroyed in the election in MB shortly... I'll be partying when that happens. Thank God.
