Who here rolls more than just their pulses or soybeans?
We only ever used to rent a roller but have our own now. Some people said we'd begin to roll cereals and flax now that we have our own.
Pro....smoother and stones pushed in if you have to go low to swath or straight-cut.
Cons.....extra fuel and hours on tractor. I've seen rolled fields pool more water in a heavy downpour, ridges act like sponges and I think the land will absorb water better than rolled.
Does it contribute to some compaction (minor) and an anaerobic state in the soil? Seeding conditions the next spring in non pulse stubble---come up lumpy or can it be mallow.
I don't like driving tractor that much to take up recreational rolling!
