Well our good luck this spring I knew would end but as each week passed with just enough rain 3/4 is a rain over that is a shit show. But moisture has increased and increased bad in our area. 5 inches for month of may and it came mostly since may long weekend.
We finished seeding on Monday afternoon and had over 1/2 inch driving home in the rain. Then it rained all night but last week a hail event happened and it left what looked like snow on the side of the road lots of moisture in a already saturated area. I would say our area is 96% done but a strip north of us and towards Melville has crop out. Also a area north of Foam lake has crop to seed.
See last fall we had a wet October but the no snow or min event looked great. then the dry spring looked awesome flats dried out and we were able to seed. But lots of mud below. Well that ended and now we have a fricking mess. Creeks running and flats back with water lots of water.
I never in my life ever dreamt that I would hate rain. Getting close.
Spent lots of Dollars seeding areas that are now gone. Prov flood program is good for shit. 10000 acres x 5% basic loss deduction and then they pay on the rest. We lost 500 acres guess what no coverage. Great just fricking great.
So here it is June 2 nd and for some of us in our area we feel beaten and bruised but not just finished yet. Big yields are a thing of the past. as you spent the money to seed and those acres are lost but have to come out of the rest of the crop. Just added to cost per acre on farm.
HRS is up and looking good where the water table is not back to the top. One flat by our yard looked so great on May long as it had rows for the first time in years. They yesterday were now sick yellow lines.
Most will start spraying as soon as equipment will get on the fields weed pressure is min for wildoats but broad leaf are coming.
Durum is coming but thin. Get good seed boys is rule of the day. Yes I make mistakes its only a quarter but good seed makes the day. spraying will take place as soon as it dry's up.
Peas looked good no great but peas hate wet feet and with Viper spraying around the corner I feel peas wont do that great this year. If moisture quits maybe a chance but if it continues no fricking way.
Oats was out of rotation so no crop this year.
Barley looks good has a little yellow tinge and needs to be sprayed real soon. Seeded early and moving along real fast.
Canola is up or poking out of the ground. Rain washed some furrows flat and a struggle to come out of the ground. Canola in water usually is not a good thing sick early bolting plants with no Cabbage. Time will tell. Missed spraying in crop on some fields will have to go early liberty and Assure. Rest will get liberty and RR.
Few lentil fields south and towards Indian Head. Time will tell with rain how they do.
Flax very few fields seeded looks like.
So for some who wanted rain good for you. You now have a chance at a crop for us who have endured years of rain and it looked like finally the tide was turning we hunker down and try to get through another wet year.
Water is nice in moderation like Whiskey Wine or beer but to much and a shit show starts to take hold way to much and your done flat on your face.
So have a great week enjoy spraying in dry fields as mud bog 16 takes hold.
Its just a fricking crop and the ones at home are way more important than killing your self over a crop.
Be safe, Even catch Mosaic in Regina if you have a chance.
