On Verge of 6 month phase out period for glyphosate????

Berlin | Reuters — Germany will abstain in a European Union vote next week on the continued use of glyphosate in herbicides, because ministries run by different parties remain at odds over the chemical which some experts say could be carcinogenic.

Contradictory findings on the carcinogenic risks of glyphosate have thrust the chemical into the centre of a dispute among EU and U.S. politicians, regulators and researchers.

“It was not possible to develop a joint position and that’s why the German government will abstain in the vote in Brussels,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Since France and Italy so far have refused to approve an extension, a German abstention could mean there will be no majority for the vote on Monday.

The European Commission will propose a temporary 12- to 18-month extension of EU authorization for the herbicide, used in Monsanto’s Roundup, to allow time for a new scientific study into fears it may cause cancer.

After failing to win support for an initial proposal for a 15-year approval, the EU executive has proposed the compromise to avoid a six-month phase-out period when the current licence lapses at the end of June.

well that'll sure change the way we farm if it ever happens here . glad I'm near the end of it . we were breaking up fence lines between quarters and there is a 3 ft high ridge of topsoil . it would be real smart to go back to the dust bowls of the past . doesn't amyone ever learn anything from the mistakes of the past????

I agree. We have broke up fence lines and funny there is a ridge of dirt about a foot or two higher. Yea tillage was a great thing. If this country would have been seeded continual from the time it was broke just imagine how big the crops would yield.

Conversation with two farmers in the recent past indicated that huge changes are coming to farming - and not only in Europe. You need look no further than here in Ontario where our dissolute Liberal (pardon the redundancy) government is planning and already implementing changes that will turn agriculture upside-down.

One source was a friend whose son is a senior bureaucrat in the Ministry of Ag. and the other sits in the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, a rather useless org in its own right.

When I commented that the gov't won't be happy until we are all back on 100 acre farms farmed organically, he replied, "No. No, they just won't be happy", meaning that the consuming public is an implacable beast.

Society is taking its direction from a mob of nihilistic fools whose biggest problem is that they have full stomachs and empty heads. A good dose of starvation for 5 or 10 years would maybe help clear their minds a little, if they're not all fried on pot.

We would survive. If it is in fact a carcinogenic, then I would be glad to see it go. I know it would be difficult for some to adapt but not all. We continuous cropped since 1974 and never used Round Up for burn off until about 5 years ago. We saw some weeds but grew some awesome crops. And as a desiccant in cereals - never - people have to eat that bread and drink that beer.

My guess is that in a few years and I mean not too far away dedication of any crop will be banned. I'm not sure if that is good or bad.

Dedication? Desication. Some farms already banned dedication on their operations. Guess auto correct isn't always wrong!

I would prefer glyphosate remain in use.

Not going to argue with you guys about the dirt blowing, but the older I get the more i do seem to value my health. Made a promise to myself ****ing flea beatles can eat away, not handling the shit anymore. Guy made comment the other day " Whippee, spraying season has started, the good old pancreas and liver just a soaking up that shit." Like you case I am almost done, thank goodness. I firmly do believe the money you do make by spraying those crops, put it away, you will need it for medical later. Just me thinking out loud. Good luck all.

Can't ban cigarettes but they can ban glyphosate , go figure. Starvation would sharpen their minds. Sugar is a greater threat to health but no one is protesting how much is added to food.

That's crap and garbage. Short memories. Think back to the days of lots of smaller farms. Remember the tractors we had? What about the sprayers we used. High tech equipment right?? Think about the chemicals that we used in those days combined with the equipment.

Now, do we really see all those farmers dying of chemical related diseases? or just of being worn out from all the hard work they put in to feed their families? How are these guys living into their eighties and nineties now? They should be long gone according to the little pansies who think chemicals are killing us - quickly.

lol comon farma do you honestly think the bto's won't be spraying today. Hell they even spray in the rain. Their crops for most part had terrible emergence but not even mother nature will stop em. You know who im talkin about farma.

Biglentil....I think that statement would hold true for many operations that are a size that dictates less than ideal practices. There aren't enough good days to follow best management practices.
