Does everyone here buy hail insurance? Do you buy from a private agent or a local insurance company?

Past rates in one of the township/ranges we have land in indicate a higher risk of getting hail than in some others. If I'm not mistaken rates were as high as 6.4%. It has since come down. And actually we are on the southern boundary of that township/range, we were paying higher premiums because the guys on the northern end were getting nailed. ...I guess they have to use or draw the boundary lines somewhere.

I wouldn't be without it. In 2001, we were blessed with 100% hail July 7, then again July 14. Yes sir, twice in one year. A big square baler parked at our place for the rest of the summer. Good hail insurance plus sold the hay. No crying that year, but we received about 60-70 the next year too. Only insurance adjusters from RM booted us in the sraca. Said we got too much previous year. The other company was good. Those two years would have wiped us out without insurance. Too bad SCIC went out of spot loss. Oh yeh, there is deductible insurance which makes it very affordable for SDGuys and now the multipliers on pulse crops has been reduced from a ways back. So SDG is a believer. Yuck she my!

I buy it to cover some costs and sleep better at night. If we had a disaster with no insurance it would not be good. Its like house insurance, you buy it and hope you never need it but its there if something bad does happen. Only put $150-200 per acre depending on crop and amount invested in it.
