Selling a trailer that is no longer needed; a guy comes out in a new dodge pickup to look at it. The asking price is reasonable and it's a good unit, but I was willing to deal a bit until he says he is just starting out, and you're a rich man - as he casts a look around the yard.
I'm too polite to tell him get off the yard, but if he calls back, it's no longer for sale to him. I'm a complete stranger and what would he know about how we got to where we are.
This entitlement attitude still pops up in SK. We have a few charities that get regular donations, pay our progressive tax rates, work in the community, donate time to our industry. But the thinking of someone who feels they should get a deal 'just because'? - that is something I don't subscribe to.
Thankfully the majority of our voters keep choosing a government (provincially) that recognizes where wealth is generated, and that a rising tide lifts all boats; unless you are too lazy to put one in the water. Federally, well, that's a different story.
It is completely different to help those in need vs help those that think they are entitled to help. The latter need not come here to get a used trailer.

Had a "friend" like that once.

He asked for "help" for something he wanted to do and said "You've got the bucks" because I possessed and made payments on farmland.

Today he's a wannabe politician and a complete a$$ who lost his family and pretty well everything he had.

One of the problems with wealth in today's world is that it often is not earned it is transferred to you. Zero interest rates are doing that everyday to real estate investors for example. Government workers another. However, when buying used equipment I would not be making such statements. Looked at an RV once and after finding out the asking price simply stated we were not in the same range. Did mention were I was at and left. Vendor called on my way home and after coming up a little on my end, own that trailer today.

Yeah there's been intergenerational transfer here. But I would still like to think I've earned some of it. The farm is 3 times bigger than it was when I started and nothing has been bought in the last 12 years(probably time to again). Also, it was always a "we" here, not an "I". I have to admit, my motives were questioned by the others but looking back, "we" should have bought more. Other than buying the dirt, we can't take credit for it's huge appreciation. And so what....if I don't cash the chips in I will never get the full benefits anyway! I would like to just keep the money it takes to bank roll this place for afew years. Tonnes of money in Ag as long as your not the Primary Producer.

Off the sprayer and on to the family reunion.... Eat, drink and reminisce. Squeeze each into each other when I can.

I get that comment a lot if I look for it. Innocent enough. And to them accurate.
Human thought processes havent changed since begining of species. True empathy only comes from someone whos been in your shoes.
The judgement of your "wealth" is what drives all redistribution schemes from socialism to family law.
It is not helped by another human trait. The inability to be humble or empathize with someone who has less.
Really want to offend a farmer today? Tell him he really doesnt "need" that $70k pick up or rv. He of course "deserves" it if its a relative expense to size of operation. But expect basic emotions like greed or jealousy from the small minded who have less.
Do I get angry when I get that attitude? Hell yes, but I keep it to myself. My debt load then, means Im angry a lot. Ive been told as the knife was pulled from my back, that " he didnt think it would hurt me 'that' bad".
Just smile and wave boys.

So was he really expecting a better deal based on what your yard had in it? Is that what you imply happened?

If you are selling, and they come to your yard, perception is there based on your operation. If buying, drive your oldest PU, dress poor and hope they feel sorry for you. Had a neighbor that played the poorly dressed card all the time!
