Grits will defend Wheat Board monopoly: Dion
THE PAS, Man. - Stephane Dion says a Liberal government would immediately restore the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly over Prairie wheat and barley sales if the Tories dismantle it.
Dion says the federal government's current plebiscite on the future of the wheat board's monopoly over barley sales is flawed, biased and has no credibility.
Dion also says the Conservatives are already hurting farmers by undermining the credibility of the wheat board in global markets.
The Liberal leader says the Tories have ideological problems with the board's grain marketing monopoly, so if they had a majority government the wheat board would be closed by now.
Dion told a group of supporters in The Pas in northern Manitoba that legislation would be needed to legally abolish the wheat board's monopoly.
And since the Tories have a minority government, Dion says the Liberals "will be there to stop it."
Conrad Bellehumeur, speaking for Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl, said Dion's attitude about changing the wheat board seems undemocratic.
"Is Mr. Dion really saying that he would take away freedoms that the
(Stephen) Harper government would offer farmers?" Bellehumeur said.
"What we want to offer western Canadian grain farmers is freedom."
