I was asked what I would to do fix the wheat board. Tough question so I'm not suggesting this is all that needs doing.
I'd start by adding farmer elected members, and subtracting appointees. I'd ensure that each candidate is getting 50% plus of their cash reciepts from crop production in the designated areas.
I'd encourage farmers to vote for farmers who have demonstrated market skills, an appreciation for what the grain growers have done for the economy of Canada and it's secondary and tertiary industrial growth, and a tough mindedness that indicates they understand the needs of the primary producers. Any candidates should also be on knowledgeable terms about the effect peak oil, water shortages and global warming will likely have on our industry and the amount of our production. Hopefully enough foresight to see a path through those and around future ones.
I don't support the board because I think we can't do the job of marketing, I support it because I think we can.
