For the second time in 3 weeks, frost developed across much of Western Europe, threatening developing winter wheat and ****seed. Conditions were exceptionally warm from January to mid March, coaxing crops out of dormancy. The question is whether wheat and canola were far enough along developmentally to suffer from sub-freezing temperatures. Temperatures had been averaging mid and upper 40sF before 2 cold waves, the first in late March and again last week. Much of central and northern France and Germany were affected, key producing areas.
Now for Canada It snowed in Western Sask and Alberta. Seeding had started in some of these areas.
Next two weeks Cooler than we seen first two weeks of April.
Peas in ground better have seed treatment or they will have problems after sitting for two weeks in cold ground.
We will now be delayed from seeding this week to hopefully starting next Monday or maybe May 1st. That's in Eastern Sask.
