I believe the Bakken oil pool will have a profund effect upon agriculture in southeast Saskatchewan, and the effects are already becoming apparent.
1. Young men, instead of choosing farming, are recruited at $500.00 per day to work on the oil field. He helps Dad in the evenings.
2. Oil leases are providing a little extra revenue, and I've met quite a few farmers who have planted their land to grass and run cows, at least until grain prices make it worthwhile for them to plant a crop. They love farming, but the price signal is not there.
3. Oil wells are popping up all over. How many AVillers's are in the Bakken zone?
4. Labor shortage. Who wants to put an immigrant from Bangladeish on a $350thou tractor? Anyone?
5. Busineeses are popping up, and farm women and men are choosing to work in other fields, and put their land to grass.
There has been a lot of agricultural wealth creation coming out of Southeast Saskatchewan over the years. At least the new Saaskatchewan Government has acknowledged that they will not forget about rural Sasktachewan. uforgivably, The NDP closed RURAL hospitals, and rural schools and wrote off our communities, and turned off the lights for farm families.
Bill Boyd, the Minister of Energy has been very agressive in welcoming oil in rural Saskatchewan. I see the results of policy in the southeast. The royalty rate, the business climate....all of the things needed, he has addressed, and done it comprehensively. And swiftly. The oil industry can now see that they are not going to be shot in their exploration-ass with a lethal tax arrow, and a deportation order. It could save a lot of farms.

And no, the CWB doesn't issue barrels-of-oil licenses, but I'm sure Vader has proposed it.
