Lentil Prices???

The lentil Prices are sure dropping this last week. Do
you think it is that the new crop harvest pressure or
do you think the prices peaked and will continue to
decline?

If the company's are thinking big yields I think that they are wrong. In west Central sask first reports on lentil yields are not good. 1800lb looking stands going 1200lb. Lots of growth not podding up like they should. With no reglone I'd like to know what type of quality we are going to produce this year. I will be locking my bins after harvest and have faith that the market is soon to be done it's correction with only higher tops to come.

How could this discussion possibly be turned into a CWB thread? Give me a break.

I think anyone that has an interest in where prices are moving should ask the question without recieving a big rant about how the CWB is stealing your money or about how the market is only going higher. No one knows where the red market is headed long term, but we do know it is softer today. We have Austrailia as a competitor in a few months. We have record acreage in Canada. We have only one buyer currently and that is Turkey, wtih State control of the buying. We have 40 cent prices ($24/bu). Takes some balls to "lock" the bins in this environment. 1200 lbs is above the long term Sask lentil average, that is still a good yield. Also hearing 1500 and over 1800 lb crops too. What affect does that have? I realize that there is not as many red growers out there, but would be nice to have an intelligent discussion about this.

I am going to contract our lentils on our farm. We
did the first 10 bu acre at 45 cents and we are 2/3
done combining our reds. I am pretty happy with
45 cents if it goes to 50 cents I will have to be
happy with the 45 cents. I think there is more of a
chance that they will go to 30 cents or less than
they do to get to 50 cents. The spot price is 42
cents now at most places and I think I will contract
the rest of what we have in the bin at that price.
Most years if we would get 20 cents for lentils we
would be happy.

I am not against the CWB. Some years we grow 11
different crops on our farm and this year we are
down to 7. We have enough marketing to do with
the other crops that it takes some stress off that
the CWB markets our durum and Wheat. Now I will
most likely hear it from someone else.

We do not give advise on when to sell crops. We do
quite a bit of custom grain and special crop hauling
all over Alberta and Saskatchewan and we see first
hand were the good prices are. It worked good for
our farm as we would haul special crops for other
farmers and see what prices and grades they were
getting ect.
