Traveled a fair bit this week in west central Alberta Innisfail-Red Deer-Rimbey. Lots of big, big crops but it is late, late, late. Only saw one field swathed - Canola near Red Deer, nothing else started. Checked a neighbors barley today, a crop that looked ripe off the road. About 50% firm dough stage, 50% soft dough and green. At least half the crops I see are almost completely green still, many are laid. This is early frost country so when will these crops be ready to harvest?

Saskfarmer3 you are so right. This bin buster crop is starting to come apart big time. On Tuesday we had a huge wind all day. Gusts up to 70km/hr and much higher. It did a huge number on the canola crop. We have large acres ready to harvest in our areas. Yes we were having some huge yields. 45 bushels to yes a confirmed yielded on a smaller field of 70 bus/ac. Well today I finished a field of canola that did 45 before the wind and the last half did 33. Some are reporting half the yields before the wind. Saw today a farmer cleaning up a field with a flex header that had been swathed. It did not matter if the canola was dessicated, ready to cut or in swath. All toke a huge hit. Have seen fields of swath canola that were cut north south with the south wind disseminated. Piles as high as reefer vans. Heard of one quarter section where the canola was gone. Ok the argument will be made just a small area. Well all these smaller sections are starting to add up. We farm in the eastern end of the Red River valley. Our crops where looking like that one in a life time. Well it certainly is not in the bin. We are now into Sept. and we have a long way to go. So weather is a major player in this crop. We have also had some quality issues with the winter wheat and hard wheats to date. Sprouting, and lot's of fuzz. Only time will tell how things will unfold.
