Rain, hail and frost!

Wow, what a last few days. Rain showers every day, hail yesterday and frost this morning. Very few acres done here this week, crops absolutley stopped maturing 6 days ago. Ahh, Sept in Western Canada, great weather to bring in this bumber crop, LOL! BTW canola dropped below break even levels today for those not priced,wheat a while ago and peas getting close - gotta love harvest time.
Anyone else getting a song and dance with parts for machienery? Was told today that a roller for a combine pick up may take two weeks to get here - I just laughed and walked out. Most combines are taking off 1000 bus/hr now, thats $10,000 - $12,000/hr when they are not working when they can - and the parts guy just shrugged his shoulders! I was told Mac Don is back ordered 2 weeks for most parts. Between mother nature, parts, fuel companies, fert companies ect - I have never seen anything like what is happening now. Our only hope is that mother nature staightens out - and soon!

the machinery companies drive me nuts. Honestly, harvest in not one of those once in a lifetime events and it doesn't just sneek up on you. Its like christmas, valentines or your wife's birthday - it comes every year and usually at the same time.

Its little wonder why farmers ask their mla's to put in laws to prevent these kind of delays. I would go one step furthur and add real penalties. In real industries whoever is to blame for a production delay - pays dearly.

Sprouting is going to be widespread. Huge pea yeilds reported out west last week (Maidstone to Lashburn).
Oh yeah, throw in a heavy dose of fog this morning and more rains last night.
No use trying to battle with mother nature - might go fishing on the river, huge pickrel getting caught right now.

After looking at the weather forcast, it is time for a three day fishing trip. I know they may be wrong but it will be Thursday before we get rolling again. Sept is sliding by very fast.
Larry, did it freeze into the Red Deer area as well?

North West of Red Deer (Rimbey) was still below -1C at 8.30 this morning with dense fog. Two hard frosts last week froze the garden out completely, potatoes etc toast. One or two fields of canola swathed around here now - nothing else and no combining done.

NO, combining here SE SK since Sunday afternoon, 4.00pm. Rain, showers, misting, drizzle or heavy fog everyday so far in Sept, including this morning. (over 2 inches of moisture through the week) Over 90% of spring seeded wheats and durum still out, along with at least 50% of barley. Most pulses are cleaned off. 75% of oilseeds still out, hoping they're not affected, but have heard of sprouting canola before if conditions are right, and this might be the type of week to cause it. Has anyone heard of damage to ripe standing flax(sticking together in the ball or sticking to the ball) if rained on too much? No frost here yet, all canola has been swathed more than a week so should be hurt that way, however more strong wind won't help matters regarding canola.

Went and checked standing (late) durum,found some sprouts so stopped checking,dont need to ruin my weekend.Neighbors (early) spring wheat looked worse.

The possibility of all the cereals in the southeast slipping to feed grades is very real.

Major widespread ergot problems to.

Checked my standing durum this afternoon & don't think it has sprouted, however the germ end looked very swelled. I concur re: ergot problem. The durum I've harvested is grading #5. WIT is putting together a program to take it to a #2, I know who'll benefit the most out of it all.

Boarder, I've seen canola sprouted in the past, buyers never bother about it, is my experience.

3 inches of rain in the last week.

standing hrs is just starting to sprout a bit (end is starting to swell) thank god we got our swathed barley off still have 500 ac of 2 row standing.

lots of swathed 2 row malt in the area it will be an absolute wreck. The heads that have broken off our standing stuff have inch long roots already.

our area is probably about 2-6% harvested
