    Late harvest

I traveled down through west central Alberta yesterday, 2 hours from HW 53 at Rimbey to Calgary. Saw two farms that had combined a little barley. Half a dozen more with barley swathed, most, but not all, of the canola swathed. How many weeks of good weather will it take to get this harvest in the bin?
In my own immediate area, a very marginal grain area in my opinion the farmers are sitting on the biggest crop acreage I've seen in recent years with nothing harvested and the highest input costs ever. On top of that with the cow number reduction around here producers are spraying out every farmable hayfield and pasture to grow more next year. How wise is this given the scenario this year?

Did the run down highway 21 on the weekend Edmonton to Three Hills and then over to Drumheller and up highway 56 to Camrose and would have the same comment. With the exception of about 6 combines (realizing the view from the highway) moving, nothing happening.

Looking for thoughts on harvest progress and yield/quality thoughts. Let us know your location.

Also note grassfarmers comments on the move away from 4 legged feed converters to crops/ quarter million dollar harevesters. Is it a year to be a contrarian?

Two weeks behind for us. Location Indus/Dalemead area SE of Calgary. First few acres combined today, CWRS 13% moisture ( couldn't belive it was that dry ). Most of the feed barley swathed due to uneven ripening and canola is all swathed. Looks like we'll get 3 good days before any further moisture so hopefully get 700-800 acres off. Then only 4000 to go.

      Cheers,

      Steve
