It's for majority government's only. Minority government's are not held to the same restriction - for what should be obvious reasons.

I just watched that clip and that room was dead quiet, not a problem hearing.
You can argue about the question itself and the wording of past and present tenses.
However, I'm pretty sure any one of us here that watched that clip understood the question immediatly.
Seriously, if this guy's english is that bad do you want this guy making laws, cutting deals with other countries?
He looked more like a kid caught lying to his dad with no explanation.

Harper's words were" The next election will be in 2009, unless the house is brought down." Let's face it, this was thought to be the opportune time to gather a majority. The Libs probably would have elected a new leader in spring, and the economy was going to have problems, they just didn't think this soon!
I applauded the set date elections to take the opportunistic BS out of politics....my applause is now one hand clapping!

Harper had a minority government when he set the 4 year election date. I for one don't vote for prime minister I vote for the local candidate. This has been no problem in the past as I have always voted conservative but now I am stuck with a lame duck by the name of Ritz and have to choose another candidate.

Sask....believe me, they are not my Libs or ND's.....just stating what is. Harper could have put through any legislation he wanted to.....the rest were too chicken/not in position for an election, to bring down the house. This was an opportunistic election call....the question being now is "Will it go as planned?"

Seems lately that the Cdn dollar has been MORE tied to the price of oil. When oil was shooting up, our $ was climbing. Now that oil is taking a kicking, our dollar is getting hit hard as well. Other fundamentals seem to be forgotten.
