    It's Time To Fix Rail.

Business Leaders Unite to Tell Ottawa: It's Time to Fix Rail.

OTTAWA, Sept. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - A group of CEOs and other senior executives from major resource sectors such as forestry, fertilizers, mining and agriculture converged in Ottawa earlier this week to deliver a strong common message - that now is the time to address inefficient and inadequate rail freight service.

The business leaders, all members of the Coalition of Rail Shippers (CRS), brought their message directly to Ministers, groups of MPs and key officials from Transport, Industry, Natural Resources, Agriculture, the Canadian Transportation Agency and the Prime Minister's Office.

"For Resolute Forest Products, the inefficiencies of rail service have an impact on our bottom line and our ability to compete in fiercely competitive world markets", says Richard Garneau, President and Chief Executive Officer. "For example, it's unacceptable for our company to receive hundreds of unusable rail cars delivered to us each year, delaying delivery or resulting in direct damage of product. In today's marketplace, you must be a reliable supplier. What we are asking of government is entirely reasonable."

The CRS wants the government to implement effective legislation that would allow more balanced commercial relationships between railways and shippers. This would include the right to a service agreement between a rail company and a customer, backed up by a dispute settlement mechanism.

"The Canadian fertilizer industry urges the government to immediately pass legislation that will ensure the railways negotiate commercial agreements with all of our member companies to ensure that our products move to market efficiently and on time as this helps increase our trade and ensure Canadian economic growth and it helps farmers ¯ our customers ¯ provide a quality food supply for all Canadians," says CFI member company executive and board chairman Norm Beug.

The CRS is looking forward to the legislative changes to the Canada Transportation Act that the government has promised to table this fall ¯a move that would help safeguard the well-being of more than two million men and women employed by members of the Coalition of Rail Shippers, enhance the competiveness of Canadian companies in global markets and support jobs and economic growth for all of Canada.

The Coalition of Rail Shippers represents 18 industry associations that support about two million jobs. Members provide 80% of the revenue of Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways.

With the guarantee of profit from moving grain from western canada for the last 60 years, why are the tracks not twinned between thunder bay and Calgary.

Watching trains stop on the main line to let the opposite travel pass is one of the most inefficient practices CP has.

And after tearing up all the tracks because they could not service anything other than mainlines, the few branchlines that are left should be sold because CP doesn't service them either. Why not have a shortline pick the cars up five miles off the mainline and let the shortline to the rest.

Better yet why not joint running rights and a twinned mainline? Great infrastructure job creator and makes CP and CN take notice that their monopoly is coming to an end if they don't pick up the pace.

Great job for Pulse Canadas' Gordon Bacon and Greg Cherewyck for: the vision, organization, coordination documentation, articulation, planning and action to create this powerful group and process! Now we have a voice of industry which are key to Canadian prosperity negotiating our needs with the conduit of export for most: rail transportation. Way to go Pulse Canada, and notably the industry support from you the farmers and especially the Sask Pulse Growers! Commendations are due!

Wow, the big wheels, shakers and movers
are going to take on the RR'ds.
Whinning and sniveling volume about to
increase. Down the road ahead, we'll
see, higher and higher freight rates.
Always has been the Comedian way, always
will be the Comedian way. After all
RR'ds are sacred in Comedia, remember
the its the national dream, land grants,
mineral grants, subsidies all were doled
out to Comedia's RR'ds, we lovem,
whatever they do to us, has always been
part of our Comedian dream (er
        nightmare), depends on your perspective.

Railroads and their companies that run them are the most inefficient corporations in the world. They are for the most part still using the handbook written for them in the eighteenth century.

In today's world there are a half dozen unions involved (none of which co-operate with each other) and government legislation which hasn't been critically looked at for eons.

Demurrage was set up to harass users with onerous nit-picking charges and in many cases discouraged business.

They received a good chunk of western Canada for their "service"...time to quit adulating them and tell them to get with modern times and streamline their policies and attitude.

What the coalition of shippers does is present to the government a cross industry performance measure of a system necessary to enable the traffic that drives import and export in Canada from all sectors with the espectations that the rail needs work in a reasonable and predictable manner so we can. Powerful voice. The rail has met its match. History aside.

And if they can get a handle on performance, with all the oil traffic going past our place on rail these days, my guess is time to buy shares in rail. Warren and Bill just could be right!
