Dont know the industry but as a generalization
you could maybe catagorize it as value add which
        is toast in canada.

Obviously lots of discussion on the beef site here, it's a high stakes game of poker and Nilssons know that at this time of year with the calf run on they hold a pretty good hand.

As a (thank God!) former cow/calf guy I see that this was absolutely
perfect timing to steal this falls calf crop from commercial growers.
Coincidence? I would have changed gears quickly to put my calves on feed
instead of taking them to town but I don't know how many other guys
            would have that option.

Once again the primary cow/calf guy gets it on the chin.

One thing i didn't come across is feed grain needs, will
more or less or no effect?

Some sellers will probably hold back their calf crop, waiting for this to blow over. Those animals will be on more of a maintenance ration as opposed to a finishing ration.....the trick is how many can hold them over.
My question is, aftr this blows over, how many are going to say "This time I'm going to sell.....!"

Nilson's took over the saskatchewan cattle industry in one quick swoop.

The funny thing is, if they went to the saskatchewan government and said they needed money to open up moose jaw again, the government would open the check book.

The Lakeside plant is closed - permanently. It is well
past its best before date. XL milked it for all it's worth
and now they have the perfect excuse to walk away
clean and put the blame on someone else. Period.

rockpile: I truly hope you are wrong, while suspecting you might be right!
If XL closes permantly they will take a lot of the big feedlots in southern Alberta with them.
With one buyer (Cargill High River) the only option for the feedlots will be to sell into the US...which is a money loser....ask someone who knows like Rick Pascal?
Surviving western Canadian cattlemen will follow the example of those who have gone before them.......sell the cows and start breaking up land!
Like the western hog producers we are about ready to become extinct! Thanks useless government.

Amen to that Rockfile. I has feeling of
going happening couple months ago. Oh
well too bad for us even me. It going to
                        be permanent.
