Any talk about big reductions in canola acres or not growing canola at all next year due to the cost of production? Some serious thoughts in this area.

Got inf from Canola Specialist. Aster Yellow can over-winter in the living crowns of perennial crops and weeds or it can be brought into the prairies by the aster leafhopper insect as it migrates from the United States.
That is his quote.
Wonder how cold will kill aster yellow in crown since it is not virus or bacteria, or fungus, it is phloem of infect plants can carry from and to other plant by sap sucking leaphopphers.
I have seen North Battleford Sask and that area quite pretty bad, even wheat or barley not sure which one might get one and most farmer do not tillage and leave as no till and the question is will over-winter kill crown. No idea how cold will kill, same with BC tree beetle problem. Maybe aster yellow problem due varieties of canola and some don't. He suggest seed earlier. Not in my area seed earlier as he suggest.
Maybe it time to call off canola in 2013 year. My bet is canola seed is going to be somewhat less in 2013. Or unless in US weather change to wet instead of drought in 2012. He saying, leafhopper go flying in 15 C and when cooler or 15 C or below or wet it will not go flying. Interesting his information.

We had aster yellow here in 07. Was probably just as bad this year as is was in 2007. In 2008 averaged 50 bushel canola. With the kind of winters that we have, would be more concerned with them blowing in next spring rather than it overwintering here. Remember, the disease can over winter here all it wants, its the leaf hoppers that you have to worry about. They carry it. Simply put, no hoppers, no aster yellow next year.

Happyfarmer, didn't know has aster
yellow in 07, thought it was new disease
as this is my first year we got it here
this year. Canola specialist saying he
has heard Spring leafhopper as adult. Do
by mean leafhopper survive in over-
winter in ur area or migrate from
States.

I had to share a conversation that I had today. The persons analogy was someone on farm with an engine on farm that they pushed to maximum (I think the expression was they kept the engine at red line) and didn't do a particularly good job of maintaining it. Now the engine is using oil, they are complaining. They thought it had a fit in how many farmers have included canola in rotations. It paid the bills so run it to the max in rotations.

The hoppers MAY overwinter and re-emerge as
adults next summer. They do not overwinter well
on the praries. If we had a extremely mild winter i
would be somewhat concerned but a harsh winter
would basically wipe them out.
Honestly in my opinion, the overwintering adults
wouldn't concern me on how severe they will be
next year. my biggest concern would be what the
weather will be in the us next spring and if or if not
it is favorable for the to blow in, which is
unpredictable at the moment.
Hope that help.

Yeah, ifn framers continue to say that
they ain't gonna, buy Canola er grow the
stuff. The price of seed will have ta
drop like a stone. Butt I believe that
the retailers and grain companies know
this is just a threat. Framing is GREED
driven and I predict a HUGE HUGE HUGE
crop of canolie in 2013!
