And that's the danger with two things. Taking a strong position.
Including someone who does not have anonymity in this site and is quite public.

I'll talk to ya larry next time i get the chance face to face. I've done a poor job explaining my position as it is quite a large topic of how the 'classes' of farmers are treated. But its time someone did.

Perhaps an outstanding farmer could be determined by asset to debt ratio, not simply the wow they owe a lot of people money factor.

        wd9, I hear you. I have a neighbor who
farms 1000 acres, and does quite well.
But he is not outstanding, because he
has little debt, takes smart risks, and
        runs old machinery.

Watching that video in light of the
result, is to me hilarious! I am sorry,
but I do find it very humorous. Is that
        bad? lol
The outstanding nominees I would doubt
are put forward by their neighbors. But
        John deere, Viterra, and most
        importantly, themselves must be putting
their name forward. You must farm a
minimum of 10 000 acres, otherwise you
        need not apply it seems.

Watching smug fellows brag, and then see
what a farce it all was is to me very
funny. Am I wrong? Only in terms of
feeling bad for the people these people
        screw....

wd-9 these super farms are being glorified because someone has the balls and testorone to get up and get at er with the resources at their diposal, it is what made this country great. People recognize opportunity have the cash and equity to do it, but won't because they don't want to take a chance, low motivation or don't have the same piss and vinegar their ancestors did to get that farm where it is today. We got to teach our kids that is okay to take a chance, ride that bike without an f....in helmut, I am not in aggreement with the extent of some of these failures but it is because everyone else sitting back and waiting, (for what?) instead of recognizing that son, daughter or kid in the community that is ambitious that needs some good mentoring and some cash to get started, sit back be the banker make a good rate of interest and smile on their success.

Is it ballsy to do it with little of your own money
effectively having little to no personal risk?

Kodiaks original question is a good one. What are
the criterion? No one has even attempted to
answer but they all seem quite similar.

              Balls, maybe. Testosterone? Maybe. But
no brains. No ethical thoughts. All
              based on lies. Period.

If one watches that video and sees the
lie, it is pathetic. Not everyone chases
this madness, because unknown to some,
not everyone is desperate to be
recognized as the biggest. Some people
need their egos stroked, some do not.
The ones who need them stroked, think
the rest of us are jealous of the guys
              with "balls and testosterone."

I fail to see why people who are
              criminals are praised for having
"balls". We are not all criminals
              either.

One of the major problems here is how much
this goofball and his lenders have raised
the cost of production for his more
sensible neighbors? Land rents and input
costs higher that they otherwise would be.
I hope to see this operation and many
others on the auction block in the near
future. I was hoping to see Wigmore on the
block as well but so far they have avoided
that by finding more gullible investors.

ajl, is Wigmore in deep? I only ask cuz I
have some relatives who think wigmore is
                  "the ONE".

this fiasco happened because banks and investors are making next to nothing on cash interest.. wd-9 everytime you make a deposit in savings you are letting your banker lend on your behalf to make money on your money. Banks and investors right now think that ag is a cash cow and they will jump at the chance to lend to anyone that looks like they can pull it off. This will continue as long as interest rates remain low and we enable them, so don't sit there and whine about it when it happens, instead get involved in your local credit union boards etc and watch where your money is getting lent to.

Blame the banks? lol How about the dude
who faked it all? Probably lied to the
banks. Actually, he MUST have lied.
