    stewart appoints watch dog

this should make some real estate agents nervous about any past, current or upcoming farmland deals that don't seem to past the smell test.

Some laws are meant to be broken, others are not meant to be changed. This is one of them that should not have been changed.

They changed the ownership laws back when old people couldn't give their land away, the next generation didn't want it because that meant they would have to work and make nothing so they moved away and ma/pa kept going until they had to sell.

So in came a wave of new investors that helped out poor ma/pa and set up junior with a nice inheritance.

The country side could have been re-populated had the law stayed, maybe there would not be mega farms but rural living would be a great living and financially rewarding now.

      One whole guy, WOW!!!
I expect information just after we could have used it.
Nice to see it initiated though.
I sure hope he doesn't like suitcases full of money
falling down the chimney this Christmas.

Bucket: Good thing Ma & Pa hung on and
worked, scrimped and saved all their
lives. Now that they are done farming all
their children who didn't want to take the
risk will benefit from their parents
determination to stay at it while the
assets appreciated and can now be
              beneficiaries of asset apprecitation all
while the parents are too old to enjoy it.

Yep there are examples of it almost every year.

****ing junior, who worked in the city and enjoyed the lifestyle inherits 100s of thousands of dollars while his mom and dad sit drooling in an old folks home. What's worse is that junior can't afford to pay too much for the parent's accomodation because he doesn't want to spend their money on them.

Or there is the other type of junior that comes home now and buys a nice new line of equipment with daddy's money and poof, he is a remarkably good farmer. Didn't put a ****ing dime of his own money into SFA on the farm and will inherit a nice operation and then sell when times get tough again.

Lots of resentment here, why, we can all fill our
pockets tax-free. No problem! The funny thing is
money isn't everything. Some like to farm, some
                  like to count their dollars.

Sumdumguy: Some like to do both--farm
                      and count their money, LOL.

My above post was just an observation.
Unfortunately, too many of the older
                      generation suffer "depression
                      mentality".
A lot of those people grew up at a time
when there was no spare money and they
"learned" to save and be frugal. No
fault of there own. Yet their kids and
especially the grandkids have grown up
not wanting. Not that this is always
the case but it would be nice to see
those who earned it enjoy more of it,
                      I'm sure their kids will.

I am sure that the MLA wont have just one guy
policing foreign ownership issue. One director
and staff sounds more appropriate. His
effectiveness will depend upon how well the
foreign ownership legislation is written. There
may be several court cases and work for
attorneys. We had good legislation in place
before, now we are "open for business". I dont
think any of us want to see our heritage (good
rich dirt and minerals) sold off to foreign
investors even if it does make ," my daddy rich".

Not to mention the effect big farms have on small
                          communities.

                          Am I wrong?

Can we not see these things coming....and then extrapolate a little to project what the short and longer term impacts will likely be.

So, govt is good or is it bad? No one wants govt
involvement in ag policy.. In the free market we
will out compete other countries with what, our
pristine Canadian image? Globalization like it or
                              not.

We do need govt, and it can't always be on the
terms we want or think we need. For this to
happen lobbying will be required, as there are not
enough rural votes. Maybe even promotion in
agriculture, what we do and why.

Some don't know where mike and eggs, lentils,
and bread come from. Yes the store.
