Depending upon interest I would be willing to elaborate further on rural communication possibilities. It all depends on the response from readers and if they are interested and will share their information. It would be most useful to know what other rural people are currently using. Please copy; and add to or delete appropriately and paste your replies.
Note ISP = Internet service provider eg. cable Sasktel etc
VOIP= Voice over internet protocol or Internet telephone service such as Skype or Magic Jack that provides almost a full alternative to landline telephone (plus video options etc)
WAN = Wide area Network (THE INTERNET)
I'm not selling anything; and can't provide access to my farm network. You've got to do that for yourself; and then your little hotspot is your domain for your own farm business and personal use.
Rural Communication and internet service (user info)
ISP (advertised download speed) 5 Mb/sec
ISP (advertised upload speed) 500kb/sec
Download speed at home/cell etc 1.4 to 4 Mb/sec
Upload speed at home/cell etc 500 Kb/sec
Present LAN network ultimate speed capability.........54Mb/sec but currently internet connection speed is limited by ISP. Just like the last 7 years, I expect it to remain there for much longer. Max Tv isn't coming to rural Sask soon; if in this lfetime. The excess wireless network speed can be utilized within the local area network for other uses. Not fully there yet.

Costs..........
Unblockus....... $50 per year
Netflix ...... $8 per month
Local Satellite Stations CBC, CTV,Global; Firelog channel, PBS....free
installation and perpetually free subscription
High speed internet subscription...... $50.00 less any discounts (provincial telephone utility company)
Distribution....... personal LAN using Motorola wireless gear etc. Covers entire farm area (spread over a couple townships ; surveillance; high speed internet connection to any computer device over the entire farm area.
Future plans .... some day may be integrated with transmitting RTK GPS base station correction data; remote control of various equipment; data logging; weather stations; widespread surveillance and detection etc; connection to other personal networks. Even council meetings and SPG AGM.
VOIP..... MagicJack about $30.00 initially and about $1.00 per month therafter. What a bargain; and quite acceptable quality under all conditions. Extremely few dropped calls (cell phones aren't perfect ; are they)
New desktop computer (less monitor)...... less than $400
LCD/plasma TV.........$400 and up
Cell phones.............none
Land line phone..........none
Satellite/cable subscriptions.....none
Towers, routers, access points; laptops; additinal phones, cables, service equipment; time etc....from $20 to the sky is the limit. It depends on distance, line of sight and what you demand for backup, coverage area etc. But simple extensions of a network could be $100 to $300 actual cost. (or even less)
If those who are in those businesses had been able to meet my needs maybe 7 years ago; then they certainly would have been utilized. Even today; they have nothing to offer beyond what I now have; which may be a near universal situation that rural internet users will always be trapped within.
Services received.... Almost any streaming video available worldwide. High definition US or Canadian Netflix; free US Hulu, PBS, CBS, ESPN# etc. etc. etc., real US telephone number, North America long distance, free calling and every voicemail etc option you can dream of (except 911 has limitations); high speed internet that will concurrently run multiple video streams, telephone and web surfing; and above features received by mobile laptops over about a two township area in SE Sask. Secured network (AES, MAC address authentication etc)
Satellite reception.......all local satellite programming provided in Sask including (Llodminister, Saskatoon, Regina and a PBS station; courtesy Shaw
Any interest in what can be done; by sharing ideas.
