There are 2 types of excercise:
1. anaerobic and 2. aerobic
If you continue to work a muscle where
your blood and lungs can continue to
remove CO2 and all waste the muscle is
in aerobic state. You continue moving.
Once you push a little harder then the
production of lactic acid, energy
replacement, removal of waste etc
exceeds your ability to remove it, you
go into anaerobic muscle activity.
As you know, it hurts, msucle is tore
dwon and over the next 24 to 48 hours is
built up with a new layer and the muscle
gets stronger.
Anaerobic threshold is the term for when
muscle activity changes from aerobic to
anaerobic.
Neither type of workout is considered
bad, as they are very distinctly
different. Aerobic promotes cardiac
efficiency (healthy heart and lungs) and
endurance. The more you train, the
better your engine works feeding the
muscle and removing waste. For most
people the switch to anaerobic begins at
about 65% of your max heart rate, as in
your heart is trying harder and harder
to keep up.
Anaerobic is mainly used to get stronger
and has little to do with cardiac
fitness. Huge bodybuilders can have
monstrous muscles but couldn't run a
mile to save their life. Not all of
course.
i hope i won't confuse the issue by
including slow and fast twitch fibres
much but it is important. In your
christmas turkey there is white and dark
meat. The white meat is fast twitch and
the dark meat is slow twitch. A slow
twitch muscle fibre is endurance and
long lasting like running or brisk
walking. A fast twitch fibre is burst of
short live energy - jumping, changing
direction, sprints.
So, BOTH types of excercise are
important. Soccer player needs burst of
speed and powerful turns while the
ability to use slow twitch fibres to run
a half marathon per game.
Doing one without the other can cause
injuries, but if i had to choose one,
i'd take aerobic and have good cardio
pulmonary health. I'd rather be able to
shovel out a bin using smaller shovel
fulls for hours and not be tired then
trying to push big hard shovel fulls a
few times and be exhausted.
I hope this answers your question. Do
both, Go for a run around the deck, a
swim, then now you're warmed up, and
here is where the gasp occurs, do a Yoga
class using your body weight and
strengthen your inner core improving
flexibility while getting an anaerobic
workout. Its a lot tougher than you
think and works all your muscles. Or
just weightlift and work a few muscles.
Both types of muscle activity are
important, both require different
workouts, both help each other to
produce a stronger fitter you!
