    Bitching about RR's

Everything about this whole discussion is about 35
years old - nothing has changed. I was involved
with farm organizations and Govt groups through
most of the first 15 - 20 years dealing with grain
transportation going back to how the 'Crow Benefit'
should be paid out, to rail line abandonment and
consolidation, and to the end of the Crow Rate and
implementation of the WGTA. Two ground rules
overlooked - 1. the Crow never impeded tertiary
processing and investment because grain and grain
processed products paid the same freight rate. 2.
The railways will never invest in 'surge capacity'
because from their point of view, it makes no sense.
During discussions on ending the Crow it became
apparent what CP and CN wanted and to their credit
they were always up front and honest about what
they wanted to see - full commercial rates, and
their proposal was a bidding system where a certain
number of cars would be allocated per week and
then the players would bid for those cars to be
spotted at their locations. The highest bid wins the
cars. The CWB and CGC stopped that in its tracks,
no pun intended. Now, that's the only outcome I can
see, and this $3 million dollar 5 year study is
nothing but the means by which you will be sold on
this as the only solution. So glad I'm out of the
    squirrel cage. Good luck!

Was told by a University Prof in the 70's that the railroads wanted 1 elevator in the middle of the prairies.

I could understand the current situation if we still
had 100's of small elevators and 10-20 car spots .
But something is seriously wrong with virtually all
mainline 100 car spotting and high through put
elevators 4 months into shipping season and less
than 1/2 full terminals at the coasts , jmo

I was told today that more grain was
shipped in 1994 that we are on pace to
ship this year. There was a lot of wood
back then. I have yet to substantiate
but power devoted to other commodities
        large reason.

10-20!, in Fosston/ Rose Valley/Clair/ Kuroki/ Archerwill/ Watson/ Naicam/ and hundreds more, it was 12 cars! I timed a CP train spotting cars once. From the time train stopped till it started moving away was 10 tiny F'ing minutes. HUNDREDS of that sized elevators WAS the perfect system that we let "BIGGER is better" F*ck up and smash and burn. Would have saved BILLIONS $$$ in road costs and buying super b's, repairs to them, building concretes, etc, etc.
            End of rant!

Maybe its the workforce. In St.Gregor there was a man working there for the pool and he was able to weigh a truck write a check and keep all things moving all at one time. One man operation.

Oh forgot to mention the guy was also loading rail cars. So he unloaded me, wrote me a check, and was loading rail cars at the same time. It can be done.

I had a stint in Elk Point Alberta where
for part of it I was that guy as well.
Hard to believe almost 20 years ago.
