Hey at least farmers aren't getting jailed for selling their OWN wht. to whoever they want! Wow what a novel idea, selling your own wht. where you want to! How soon some forget the chronically low wht. prices we used to have, i make good money on wht., not sure why some others don't. If you can market canola you can market wheat!

Past year has been good. Winter 2014 was the worst.

you basically have no choice but to spend 10-12 on canola seed, if you seeded bin run and took a stand you would be jailed.

My sour taste for them started early in my career. With the quota system I could not sell all my crop every year and it was starting to build up. Guys with other land such as pasture could haul most off the combine the way it worked. Then we had an early frost but mine was off before it. They came out with the contract system and I was so happy to haul all my grain that fall and thought this was going to be a much better system for us. Until I found out the world price was 6 per bushel and I ended up with 4 on my beautiful scarce wheat. I always hated contracting wheat after that. If you did not contract you might not be able to sell. If they lowered the price you had to sell if contacted.
I have some contracted over 7 and some over 6.5 and am happy with that this year.

may-be.....but you're just at someone else's mercy now. Let's say you harvest garbage. Do you have a premium and discount schedule attached to that contract? Just saying.....

For that very reason I don't like forward contracting wheat based on specific grade and px parameters. Different story for canola. ...not much grade risk there!

If I do not like the discount with a poorer grade, someone else with better wheat would be happy to fill it for me. At least I have options now and not waiting 1.5 years to find my verdict. Is that not like being at someone's mercy?

I find it odd that a brokerage can pick up grain on farm truck it past 8 terminals on the way to the US border and the grain cos don't want that business.

                    And they pay more.

Someone is making a killing on Canadian farmers.

And the way the red lentils are being done it might as well be on a quota system.

Actually it is ... some companies have a 100 tonne sign up limit .

That is all well and fine when your contract price is higher than the current spot price but what happens if the wheat market takes off and it goes to $8/bu. going to be tough to find someone to fill that contract. Its a 50/50 chance contracting. Some winners some losers but the grain company always wins. I too do not like the wheat contracts because of the grading factors. No discount schedule available till time of delivery (such BS), that only works good for them. Not saying the CWB was the best, they needed to have an overhaul with more of the farmers interest in mind. But these grain companies are getting ridiculous with their contracts.
