What is the best farm dog breed?

After reading the security thread,Cotton started me thinking about what the best breed of dog is to have around the farm.

We have had a number of golden and black Labradors - they have been good with the kids and bark at anything they see out of the ordinary. Only had one bite a delivery person over the years and he might have kicked the dog.

Inside the house we just lost, to old age, our smaller Schnauser who while small was a great protector of the house but all bark no bite.

Our dogs seem to become part of the family so we are careful to pick based on temperament and breed.

Hardly a watch dog. We've had the breed both ways...welcoming and stand-offish with the hair stanging up on their backs.

Very smart, loyal and attentive. At least ours are. Ours always stayed home..never roamed.

great pyrenees dogs Are awesome around the farm, very loyal, eat coyotes, hate salesmen and gas thieves, love your family and kids. Low maintenece long life. Did I mention they might be raceist.

I like the great pyrenese, they enjoy -40c more than +30c they're big and a great coyote dog ( good with cats too ) My daughter has a catahoula leopard dog. Med. to big size, growls and snaps at any stranger if i'm not around, but friendly if she knows you, can run like the wind. ( not so good with cats ).

They are also protective of the farm animals including the cats.

That is the problem with some of those dogs, YOUR family is the key. I had put on security thread about neighbor. I should have a friend of mine from Missouri who is a vet, and specializes in dogs, explain on here about some of these rare breeds, and the imbreeding of these dogs that make them so ****ing unpredictable. Be careful what you pick Farmgal if you have grandkids or people who are not there on a regular basis. I think dogs like farmaholic has can be has good has watch dogs as any. We have been keeping border collies, and like the blue heeler some are good watch dogs some are not.

We have a pyrenese/lab cross, black, about 140 lbs. Stays in yard, barks with a deep bark...and a 7lb black chiwawa/schnauzer ...she rules everything. The tag team of barking certainly alerts if someone is here.....and we can tell by excitement..or lack of...who is coning.

An animal is an animal,it twitches the wrong way it goes down.

Love the Pyrenees,had one for like eight years,great dog,aint no ****in kangal though

Do NOT get one if your neighbours are sensitive or you are near people.

The only thing i wouldn't/maybe bet money against is an ovachorcck(sp),the russian beast

Turkey and the kurds are fighting over who's dog it is and now turkey banned its export.

It has a beaver type pelt so cold is not a big deal

And well my toddlers had no problems growing up with it,otherwise a quick blow with the ball=peen hammer would have been all she wrote

The mother of all dogs,for some people,is called a kangal and i just got done playing with the neighbours irish wolf hound)great dogs to)and boxer dogs saveded my kins live,chuck me into the wild with one dog of my choice.........its a kangal

We've always had German shepherds, registered and been careful to see the parents dispositions.
had good luck, 2 were stolen, one (the best one) was murdered, present one very good. they are much better if you take them to obedience school.

I will also put it this way

Walking home at night in the middle of no where,farmers understand

The boxer was at my side

The pyranees was 7=10 steps ahead sweeping

The kangal was gone,nothing to find nothing to kill

Some ****in indian or low life shows up at your place and you have one of these,well its a change of plans for them

German Shepherd for us. They are great for making thieves think twice, and you get a good gate guarder and herding dog too. (But you need to find one with herding bloodlines for that).

Ours is indispensable.

I have a Alaskan Malamute - she is harmless but 180 lbs and a stupid look in her eye
