Oil is a great source of income - when it's market is up. But as other's have said, only an idiot would expect the market to constantly be up. Currently American's are whinging that their cattle prices are down because of imports from Brazil. They aren't looking past their noses to see that global cattle prices are down. Well Alberta, lets look past our noses and see the picture globally.

Prices crashed pre NDP. The industry crashed pre Trudeau. Are they doing things that everyone thinks are helpful? Naw, but you can't please everyone. They have their goals and are aiming for them just as the Conservatives had their goals and aimed for them.

Can't say the Conservatives, either Alberta, or Federal, left the province in any good standing with their heavy reliance on oil incomes.

Personally, I have little pity for the oil fellas who raked in the dough for how many years but can't live on EI and need it extended? Have they never heard of savings accounts? And none of them want to take the pay cut and work at wages the rest of us have worked at. I think the last quote I seen was Canada was short 60 or 80, 000 farm employees. But nobody wants to work Ag because the price cut hurts and lack of benefits (Yet lets argue about Bill 6?)

And while the moaning went on about Alberta's economy being in the shitter, records were broke for prices in Ag and tourism profits were still through the roof while retail was doing quite good. Ag has come down since then (My poor cows!) but our low dollar is still helping tourism and retail quite well. Truth is, our economy isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, just one industry that was so heavily relied on is, so it's making the ship list to the side.

Change isn't made in good times. In good times you prance about with your deficit free banner and send cheques to everyone because you have money to burn and that's what makes the voters happy. It takes bad times for change to happen and then it's the people instigating change who are at fault and the East who's at fault and everyone under the sun except us. I, for one, am not totally against the new regime. I think we have 9 spare fingers to put in other pies and invest with instead of just fisting oil.

Yes, we have mismanaged the money. All of us. Likely no party would have done better. Or will do better in the future.
I just have to draw the line regarding any support for a party with the mindset of the NDP. One of their foundations is wealth redistribution. That, for the right reasons would be fine. But they are union loving, big business hating college protesters.
Any discussion with any of them is frustrating. Because every citizen getting his "fair share", means its not fair to somebody. Usually the guy creating the money in the first place.
Deal with the family law system and then disagree with me. Deal with any union in the work place and then disagree. (I have a brother and a brother in law having stress issues dealing with unions)Try to have a discussion with any life long government employee and then disagree with me. We would not have had an oil industry if people like that were in charge. Hell, we d've lost the goddamn war! Some are genetically incapable of making money in the first place.
Don't ever support the entire socialist ideal around me after I've visited the ex's new house, truck, motorhome, etc etc. Tax free of course. And the kids only get professional help if its free.
Our society is ever leaning left all by itself. I can't tolerate anyone helping push it.

Latest carbon tax news. Justin Trudeau has proposed a new floor on a national carbon tax. Starts at 10 dollars in 2018 and ramps up to 50 dollars a tonne by 2022. The newest Trudeau economic policy to make our cost of living go up.

If many of you see carbon taxes only as a form of wealth redistribution, then remember farmers receive subsidies from average taxpayers as well. Agri-Invest is a form of wealth redistribution, with the largest grossing farms getting the biggest matching contributions. Does this make sense when the goal should be keeping more farmers in business and not assisting the bigger ones that need less help.

Yes, with a carbon tax prices for energy will go up and there will be less used. That is exactly what happened when oil prices increased during the boom and oil companies took excess profits from consumers. I guess that was okay because it was the market that was doing it. But the oil companies are better managers of your money, right?

A carbon tax can be revenue neutral in which the increased tax is offset by rebates to consumers. How provinces set theirs up will decide how this is done or not done. B.C. exempts agriculture so not all costs will go up.

Many posts on this site don't believe global warming is an issue so there is no reason to have a carbon tax.

Shouldn't a carbon tax spur on a whole new industry or struggling industries that help reduce the use of fossil fuels? It has in many countries, why not here in Canada?

What will the federal gov actually do with the revenue collected?

The revenue collected stays in the province it was collected in

You know what'll happen if a carbon tax is railroaded in. Besides everything we buy going up because everything is shipped in by way of diesel, such industries as ag may be exempted and may get a rebate but imagine the extra layer of beaurocracy to administer the rebates and tax. You know full well no one is going to pull their air drill with a wind powered tractor, and heating our houses in the dead of winter will ultimately cost us. Let's face it we live in cold sparsely populated wasteland and the environmental crackheads don't give two shits about that and would love to see us freeze to death. I have come to the conclusion that environmental protection is good and we should keep our planet clean and healthy but the whole climate change and carbon tax hegemony is fear politics used by governments to gain support of Eco types, and create a boogeyman. Much like the nazis blamed Jews, the red scare of the Cold War, or the threat of Islamic terrorism there needs to be a boogeyman to fear so governments and religion can offer a solution and perceived safety if the sheeple follow them. Whether carbon is going to kill us all in the end I don't know I'm not debating that. I just see through this facade as a control tactic.

Ok, rewording the question then. What will the provinces do with the money?
