    Snow wasn't welcome

Here in central Alberta we got about 2 inches of snow yesterday. Myself I am about 3/4 done, in talking to area producers, it seems completion ranges from 50-85% done. Irregardless lots of crop left out and looking at the forecast I don't see much happening for at least a week. I realize we are not as wet as some areas but still lots of equipment being taught to lead, this continuing moisture doesn't help. On the plus side more time to visit with family on this thanksgiving weekend.

Welcoming the snow depends on your perspective. I have two boys, 9 and 10 who think this is just great. We got the ski doos out yesterday, and they want to do the same today. If I only I could share in their enthusiasm, not quite 1/4 done here yet. And of that, most was extremely tough. Ground is getting wetter. Found standing water on the last attempt. But mostly just saturated ground with a great crop above that tricks you into thinking it is safe.

I enjoy snow and winter so I'm not too fussed other than the bad roads. But I don't crop farm so that helps me stress less.

Have to cringe driving past the canola swaths covered in it and the wheat laying down now.

Got probably around 3inchs at home. Seen some tracks where the neighbours had the sleds out yesterday. If you can't combine I guess at least you can sled!

Went cruising with the quad..... some standing canola is shelled badly...pretty white looking. Flax is like a sticky mush. Both of those crops standing with snow still suspended in the canopy... unreal. God I feel for the guys with crop still out. Lets hope the last two weeks of October are much better than the first week and a half.

West of Edmonton we're at five inches of wet snow. Things were just getting dry enough yesterday that my brother and I were heading out with the swather and combine to try some wheat when the snow stated. Turned around and came home instead. Beginning to look like next year country here. Guys are 25-40% done here. On the bright side my schedule opened up besides moving cows and keeping water systems flowing which aren't really required since it's as wet as April normally is. Last year was a drought, this year a constant monsoon, next year will be like goldilocks " just right ". 😉

Not much crop left to harvest in our area and no snow accumulation but ground pretty wet from over two inches rain.
Last time our farm had crop out, we fought through November snow to get it off but ended up doing most of it dry in spring.
Lost one field to deer damage but put cattle on it to clean up.
Was a financial loss for farm at year end.
We now have crop insurance and wildlife damage compensation available which likely would have covered loss.

I have been wondering how GARS is going to work with unharvested acres ?

So the question is with 4 inches of snow on the ground and it is still snowing what does everybody believe their chances of finishing combining are? I have looked at the long range forecast warmest day here in the next 2 weeks is +10 every other day is in the single digits with some very cold nights. Personally I think we are done until spring. I think there is a 30% chance my combine will run in the field again in 2016.

another inch or 2 of wet snow last night.
                          it just ain't right
gonna take till end of October to get near harvestable.
at least it is warming up a bit.
I have a 100 wheat standing , sort of standing , so not too worried .
but there is a lot of crop out yet, canola wheat.
                          the odds are not good,
when is a wheat swath laying in that muck gonna dry out, never

I think in my mind, this morning, the possibilty formed, that we could be hooped.
Still snowing. -7s etc overnight for most of week. More mixed flurrys end of week.
My last hope was the start of the World Series but.......
I guess you do something long enough you see a lot. First time for everything.
Immediate area <25% left out. No clear denominator as to why the who is done or not.
Moving out 25 miles, nearly done to nicely started.
Not shedding anything yet though. Even if it sits out till Xmas.
Banks were talking b4 the snow about some clients operating. Now?...
Even though had no 'season' to speak of at all this year.
Making some hard adjustments to acres standing and total acres per combine for the future!

Not giving up. I leave everything standing just for this reason. Doesn't take long to shed the snow off a (sort of) standing crop. Freeze thaw cycle should help dry things. The ground is so wet that freeze up would almost be welcome now. Long term doesn't look warm, but at least looks dry.

Cows are adding to the complications. I have a bunch of bales that I can't move due to the ground being too wet, but cows need that ground for pasture soon. Had planned on pasturing stubble by now, but most haven't got the right fields finished for that.

Snow again overnight, but it is melting, still only a couple inches on ground.
