I got off on a tangent on google and ended up searching for agriculture in NWT and Yukon. I remember reading that government was offering money for people to farm in the territories, and I wondered where and what type of farms. I found this article from 2013:

With a story that proves the government really does support farmers. This family has received $10000 towards their farm in Inuvik. And for this trivial little investment, they have expanded their farm up to two goats, five rabbits, nine hens, one rooster and five chickens. That is only $454 per unit of livestock. A bargain for the taxpayers if I ever saw one.
It would be interesting to know how the rest of the $1.2 million per year gets divided amongst the estimated 20 producers in the territory. I won't even do the math on that one.
So to all of you who complain about the ineffective support programs, you are obviously doing it all wrong, perhaps a change of address might help too.
And this was in 2013 under the conservatives who supposedly gutted the farm programs, this proves otherwise, the programs were alive and well, generously funded and prioritized perfectly.
