Think about it chuck, eastern canada is burning saudi oil, why? Why not a pipeline from the west to burn pure canadian oil? How come we don't export oil from the west coast? No pipeline! No wonder there's an over supply. Do you see my point?

Pipelines are critical to the export of oil. The discount on Alberta oil has varied over the last few years. Trains have taken up the slack. But world supply and demand is out of balance and all exporters are having problems.

Keystone XL may well be approved. The Kinder Morgan already transports oil to the west coast. Enbridge already exports to the US. TransCanada may get approval to move east. Who knows with politics.

Pipelines have become a proxy for the politics around climate change. Same thing in the Dakota Access.

There are also lots of legitimate environmental concerns when they break and pollute drinking water supplies and coastlines. Pipeline companies make big errors in choosing routes and are not particular good at public relations.

Trump wants a share of the Keystone XL profits. How will that work?

Why did the oil industry wait so long with Harper to get approvals? Trudeau will likely be more successful at getting approval.

But there is a good chance with demand decreasing and supply increasing in the next decades the oil sands will become too expensive to produce and they will become a stranded asset even with sufficient pipelines.

Wiseguy your analysis is simplistic. What about potash, uranium, forestry, tourism, manufacturing, health care, education, utilities, communication, tech? All sectors contribute to the economy. Oil and ag are important in some provinces but are a relatively small part in the whole country.

Oh come on now, the Saudi's are such good stewards of the land they shouldn't be paying carbon taxes.
Even though they fund terrorist groups, throw people off rooftops, stone women, don't let women drive or vote, they seem to be favoured by eastern Canada vs the evil provinces of Saskatchewan or Alberta.

According to Trudeau its more environmentally to have oil sent to eastern Canada by tanker from the Middle East than sent from a pipeline in Western Canada.

The only positive is that the Saudis won't have as much say anymore since the Clinton Foundation can't be used to buy off the president now.

The only reason Energy East was proposed was they didn't get Keystone XL and all the other pipeline proposals looked difficult to achieve as well.

Why not just put a ban on Saudi imports? Harper could have easily done that if human rights are the core issue. There are lots of other suppliers.

I think cost and quality has been driving Saudi imports. Without a pipeline it was cheaper to import oil into the east coast refineries.

What size are the refineries in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes? How much do they need?

Just pointing out the hypocrisy of eastern Canada . I Don't care how long they have been importing Saudi oil or what party started it - its wrong .
They continually slam dirty oil from Alberta - have taken huge transfer payments from the west while helping sponsor a known terrorist state. Now in a panic to close dirty coal as well , all the while saying it's ok and economical to import blood oil from Saudi .... follow the money
Environmentalists out east don't say a word about this ever. The same ones who think this carbon tax is going to save the climate ...
