    Inexpensive vacation destinations.

I like how people have been posting their vacation photos.

I would like to take a trip with the wife somewhere warm but need to do it on a budget.

    Can fly out of Calgary.

    Any suggestions?

I just got an email from "TravelZoo" Calgary to Memories Varadero Beach Resort in Cuba for $996 a person for a week all inclusive leaving Jan 15th.

Mayan Riviera - 995 plus tax - same date (Jan. 15) and you can actually eat and enjoy the food. No offence to Cuban fans - yes the beach is great - but the poor food doesn't make up for it.

If you have airmiles - hotels.com always has blowout hotels only pricing and you can set alarms for your price targets.

Our best value trip was to Maui last year. Booked the flight on a sale, but the real saver was we rented a condo. We ate breakfast and supper at home. Groceries were reasonable. Two large ribeye steaks were $12.00. Fruit was cheap. Condo had a BBQ. We only ate lunch out, either shrimp or fish tacos at food truck. The condo really saved on food and drink. I find eating out to be a huge cost. You and the wifey would love the spirit of the island.

Can compare things at this site to get an idea. Lowest price is Cuba. Wouldn't be afraid to stay at the Royal De Cameron outside of Puerto Vallarta if you can get it cheap.

theplowboy can you define "on a budget"? Specifically what could you afford per person?

We fly out of calgary too. Tripcentral is really good like Crusher says and have booked through them 4 times. Look at the "classic grid" for pricing and you can sort real easy and the price you see is all in not the usual where they add taxes and fees.

We're gonna go back to Cuba again in January, haven't booked yet. It's cheap and hasn't been wrecked by the Americans yet! We really like it there, as someone mentioned food is hit and miss but you won't go hungry. We like the fact you can walk half a mile to a section of beach and not see anyone all afternoon. Everyone camps by the resort for the bar but the beaches just keep going. Other warm places we've been you are fighting for a couple square feet of sand between a fat lady, some rowdy college kids and an annoying drunk dude. (Probably been the later two at one time but not anymore)

Water is calm there too, great for young kids, maybe not as much fun for some water sports.

If I fly out of Calgary I can afford to go to Okotoks, maybe High River if I catch a sale.

Apparently a human hand that touches a sea turtle causes health issues to the turtle. Last year on Maui I witnessed a shouting and pushing situation when someone picked up a turtle and a marine biologist on the beach went crazy. Lifeguards called the police. It was quite a scene.

                            Bali Indonesia is very inexpensive
Have been there a couple of times and we really liked it.

Quite a long flight but can have a layover in Singapore or Thailand.

Before we went to Bali the first time I talked to a local guy who travels all over the world and I asked him where he recommended to go and he told us about Bali.

We did our first trip to Bali through CAA second one we did ourself.

We lined up a tour guide and for $50 a day he would pick us up at our hotel in the morning in a nice SUV and drive us anywhere on the island we wanted to see for the whole day. He brought a cooler we could put our drinks in the cooler. Very good tour guides.

Then in the resorts it was 90% Australian tourist so it was fun to visit with the Australians at resort and go out and see Bali.

Can not wait to go back again

I've been involved in that same spot every summer since 2009. My contribution has evolved to more than just sleepless nights digging out eggs and releasing baby turtles to the sea. I try to spend 10 days near the full moon in July as activity is the highest; the first year I flew back when the bulk of the eggs I dug up were hatching.

Every turtle that hits the ocean at that location has human contact.

There are 4 marine biologists there from May to October - one of them is there 24/7. It was a slow year this year. Just over 9900 turtles were released. Best year in the last six was 2012 when 16,650 were released. In 2013 the entire sanctuary was deluged in an early minor Cat 1 hurricane - and every nest was lost. In 2015, one mother laid 11 different times over the course of two months. Her smallest nest was 68 and the largest 173.

Every egg is touched by a human hand as the eggs are moved to a sanctuary after the mother turtle has moved off the nest. Every baby turtle that hits the water at night is also dug up as they are hatching, put in a holding pail by human hand and then released between 10:00 pm and 4 a.m. under darkness.

The Maui people might want to take some lessons from their Mexican and American counterparts at Playa Secreto whose research and experience have survival rates that are envied throughout the world.
