How much did Sask receive for decades before they had to start paying?

But it does seem ironic a province of 1.1 million people has to pay for the welfare of provinces that are much larger.

It's interesting to see that at one time sk. and mb. were both have not provinces, and now it's mb. which is still a have not prov. , hopefully we can pull ourselves out of the mud also.

Equalization seems to be a policy to reward bad economic policies and transfer $ from west to east.

Quebec will receive $ with their lucrative social programs and anti-resource development/business policies.

I think I heard that the payments are based on a formula over 3 years or something. I bet the formula gets changed before the resource provinces get a chance to see dollars flow the other direction. Anybody know how those numbers compare to previous years?

Interesting to note that Manitoba (1.282 million pop.) requires 30% more than Ontario (13.6 million pop.), having 10% of the population. More total dollars, over 10x more per capita, ON, 107/hd vs. MB, 1384/hd.

Yes, that's what 17 years of ndp rule will do to a province. It's embarrassing for any manitoban who takes pride in their prov. imo . mb. has lots of natural resources that could and should be used to improve our prov. .And quebec is a disgrace to the country again imo ( the spoiled brat of the country )

I just ask why has the west not separated? It doesn't take much brain power to figure out where good ship Canuckistan is headed. Why be on board as it sinks?

apparently when the formula was made up they had to leave out revenue from hydro electricity. This was done to get Manitoba and Quebec to agree to the deal. How hydro is regarded as a non renewable resource and oil is classed as a renewable resource is beyond me.

I appreciate Brad Wall pointing this out. At a quick glance it looks like total equalization payments are roughly 15 billion of which Saskatchewan contributes 580 million. Unfortunately Alberta contributes much more even with projected deficits of 10 billion a year! It is amazing to me that the federal government extracts about 10-11 billion more out of Alberta in corporate and personal income tax than it returns in programming! Should the west separate? Absolutely!!
