Oleary has the right target in his sights.

Listening to career politicians won't help any of us or Oleary.

He said he will repeal the carbon tax....and ....anyone that continues to engage with one will have their transfer payments reduced by that amount. ...

He had explained paying a tax doesn't reduce emissions. ...made sense to me.

The Trump effect will hurt Oleary's prospects as a strong majority of Canadians disapprove of Trump including lots of Conservative supporters.

Trump has the lowest US approval ratings of any new president. No honeymoon effect! I think there will be a lot of voters remorse in the US that will make Canadian voters who favour a Trump lite kind of character like Oleary very cautious.

You may be critical of Trudeau, but he comes with a way more experience at politics than Oleary. He has more charisma and is more approachable for most Canadians.

Oleary is part of the urban elite and is not a social conservative. I doubt many rural western voters would find his social views acceptable.

I think many on Agriville and westerners in general forget how diverse the country is. The hard core of social and fiscal conservatives found on Agriville make up only a very small proportion of the voters.

The centre left voters in this country are a good 60 -75% of the electorate depending on the election. Any hard push to the right like trump will guarantee a Liberal government for a long time.

Mulroney and Harper to some degree moved to the centre and found some success. A lot of the hard right views on Agriville would never get past any serious scrutiny at a Conservative policy convention.

"On social issues, Mr. O’Leary is remarkably liberal-minded. He believes physician-assisted dying should be widely available. And he agrees that no one, not even terrorists, should be stripped of Canadian citizenship.

“I don’t think there should be two classes of Canadian citizens,” he says, criticizing the former Conservative policy.

In fact, he points to former Conservative leader Stephen Harper’s opposition to the niqab toward the end of the campaign for the 2015 federal election as his undoing. “Harper forgot what it is to be a Canadian. You don’t talk about race and exclusion.”

Much has been made of the Conservatives’ need to rebrand themselves after their election loss and Mr. Harper’s departure after more than a decade at the helm.

But Mr. O’Leary doesn’t think the next leader should worry about that.

“Nobody gives a damn about the party’s brand. They don’t care. They want solutions that affect them personally,” he says.

Mr. O’Leary says he isn’t a member of a political party, and doesn’t feel allegiance to any of them. He won’t say how he votes.

“I’m agnostic to party,” he says.

He says his sole interest is the economy, and he looks like a man who is all about money, sporting a red Apple watch, a Prada bag and a money clip featuring hundred-dollar bills.

The comparisons with Mr. Trump are inevitable: They even share the same reality TV show producer, Mark Burnett.

But that’s where Mr. O’Leary says the similarities between himself and Mr. Trump end.

“He’s riding a populist wave in the U.S. trying to solve problems for an angry constituency there that we don’t have in Canada.”

I'll say it. Ban the unions. Have no problem with eliminating the GST exemption and even an increase in GST, IF all income taxes are eliminated. Then sit back and watch people succeed. Would be a nice change not having to try and hide income from the tax man.

Chuck. Your comments on support base are probably right. At least this time you are not calling us all wrong. You are stating the fact that we are a small minority. Population, not area. Should we then give up? You yourself are still trying to resurrect the cwb. I would still support an area representative, elected senate if it were possible.
Setting aside the vast differences between our respective electoral systems.
How many Can. elections was the map generally one color? Something hard for many to understand gave Trump most of the map. That is fact. Your team Chuck had better figure out what that was.

Here, talk to the people who produce new dollars. Ask them how they feel. What they really believe. Not the screwey survey your buddy Justin has on democracy.ca. Because like it or not its the produced dollars that pay for what everybody wants. A lot of what I hear on the news panders to the spoiled teenager-like voters from every "special" Canadian. You created them Chuck.
I wonder what we could agree on Chuck? A balanced budget? Low debt? So many dollars down a gopher hole, where to start?

In a perfect world a good income tax is all we need. But too many people hide money.
