Wondering No More NAFTA, Then FTA that existed before 1994

23 years of NAFTA and where is Canada. There is no doubt that we too have lost jobs to Mexico. Lots of questions on the table. There is going to be arbitrage in the manufacturing sector whenever economies of differing living standards compete for jobs, so 2 questions- "Will US limit duties to Mexico?" and "Will Canada be adversely affected if we go back to the original Free Trade Agreement?"

In retrospect, I remember free borders promised in 1994. Here's hoping! But who is holding his breath? Now with Mexico and our liberal immigration policies, I wonder how we will fit into Trump's vision for America.

NAFTA has not done much for Canada as our exports to Mexico have not increased much since NAFTA. So if it gets ripped up, it will hardly be noticed. Jobs would have moved their regardless.

Exporting wheat and barley to the US we need a NAFTA number. Without the number, we do not get tariff exemptions. Under NAFTA, a certain tonnage of grain can enter the US tariff free. Once the quota is reached, tariff rates apply. I have never heard of the quota being reached. Nevertheless, without the NAFTA number, exports are really not possible. So, NAFTA has benefitted us in that respect.

But when does the tri lateral agreement become superseded by the WTO?
