The family emigrated from the German settlements of the Black Sea region and arrived in New York on the SS Aller October 31, 1886. Homestead entry 1889 north of present day Balgonie Sk. Husband(my great grandfather) killed in Regina in 1893 during the building of the courthouse. Family then basically "more or less" abandoned the first homestead and when the first son was old enough to take his own homestead they resettled where we are today in 1902.

I wouldn't go as far as to say refugees, but immigrants for sure. I don't think things had gone bad in the Black Sea region by the time they left but maybe saw trouble coming? Or just decided to take an opportunity in a new land because there was none there(?). Ship records/manifest show no other families of the same last name as ours.

Of course using your Loyalist analogy, muslims should be flocking to countries that share their culture and faith rather than trying to stay in places where that isn't the norm.
My ggggrandfather came north with an American musket ball in his leg to be with people who already shared his culture

        Troll Chuck

A bit of apples and oranges this morning just to stir up the pot some more because apparently you do not have anything better to do ( like work),
Do you actually believe what is going on is the same as when our great great grandfathers came over to a British colony in full view of the crown or other people , or are you saying this is the same as when the migrant hunters came over the Bering land bridge. Very different times and places and situations. You better study how human migration over the years has actually worked world wide vs how the principles of immigration is supposed to work. If you want full on migration fine but be prepared to fight for what you have because that is what happens when migration occurs.
I am perfectly fine with immigration as those that immigrate do so showing that they understand and respect the rule of law and the need for a civil society to maintain an orderly process. Those that migrate not only jump the Que on those that wish to legally and respectfully seek entry to our society and economy but immediately show that they are willing to flout the laws and people of a country for their own benefit disregarding all others, that is the path that leads to conflict.

Now that said as a democratic country we have a elected govt and representatives to see the laws and processes of our country are followed and we must have faith in them to do so , should they fail in their duties we have the right and responsibility to hold them accountable through the democratic process.

My parents came to Canada. They had to out up a $100,000 bond with the government, prove their skills, buy land, and farm it with a business plan showing income in the first 3 years.

Then they got their $90,000 back (Canada used to have an immigration tax)

So I'm sorry but how is that in any way similar to my wife's friend's immigrant boyfriend who came here to study finance, had his student loans forgiven and now works 4 hours a day part time installing flooring... while his g/f works 18 hours a day at two full time jobs and still cooks and cleans...

The sad part is that a lot of these issues aren't even race based. Entitlement and greed is just as prevalent with local 20somethings.

Ask yourself this... if our millenia went to another country would they adapt to that country's way of life customs and culture? Probably not!

Millenialism Isn't just an N/a problem!

My great grandfather died in a refugee camp in russia in 1915, the rest almost starved. Grandfather needed 1000 dollars cash to get in the country in 1939. No free ride here. People were deported back to europe who failed to pay back the 5 dollar a month relief in the 30s. They have it pretty good now.

1970s: 7,000 Chilean and other Latin American refugees were allowed to stay in Canada after the violent overthrow of Salvador Allende’s government in 1973.

7000 "refugees" bulls hit. Salvador Allende was the idiot who started the wave of communism and terrorism in South America. His followers murdered, butchered, burnt and ****d anyone who didn't follow his ways. Those 7000 weren't refugees they were the instigators that had to flee when the public with the military's support rose up to crush these effing maniacs.

So if one could just decide they want to take up residence anywhere they would like, whenever they would like, where would you like to go for a couple of years or more if it pleased you?

I think I would like to go to The South of France or Greece, than maybe Equador for a couple of years. What a fun world it would be especially if they would support me, house me, educate me and provide free health care.

Klause you are full of BS when it comes to Chilean history. Allende was a democratatically elected socialist. His policies certainly move Chile to the far left. But your claims of terror are unfounded.

With the help of the CIA he was overthrown in a coup and replaced by Augusto Pinochet who was a brutal dictator.

"From the start of the new military government harsh measures were implemented.[10] During the period of Pinochet's rule, various investigations have identified the murder of 1,200 to 3,200 people with up to 80,000 people forcibly interned and as many as 30,000 tortured.[11][12][13] According to the Chilean government, the official number of deaths and forced disappearances stands at 3,095.[14]

While you and I may have not supported Allende's socialist platfom you would have to be a fascist to support Pinochet.

"Pinochet was arrested under an international arrest warrant on a visit to London on 10 October 1998 in connection with numerous human rights violations. Following a legal battle he was released on grounds of ill-health, and returned to Chile on 3 March 2000. In 2004, Chilean Judge Juan Guzmán Tapia ruled that Pinochet was medically fit to stand trial and placed him under house arrest.[8] By the time of his death on 10 December 2006, about 300 criminal charges were still pending against him in Chile for numerous human rights violations during his 17-year rule, and tax evasion and embezzlement during and after his rule;[18] he was accused of having corruptly amassed at least 28 million USD.[19] Despite the indictment and 300 charges, he only served time in house arrest. "

Numerous Chilean refugees were settled in Canada. I met one who had indeed suffered torture.

                                Statement From The Conservative Party
                                November 24, 2015

                                For immediate release

OTTAWA – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Official Opposition Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today responded to the Liberal Government’s announcement regarding plans to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada:

“Canada is an open and generous country. Canada should continue to take an active role in assisting with the humanitarian crisis in the region.

“Refugees arriving in Canada should be welcomed with open arms and the full confidence of all Canadians. Mr. Trudeau’s campaign promise to resettle 25,000 refugees by December 31 did not include a comprehensive plan for safety, security, housing, health and integration into the Canadian family.

“We are pleased that Mr. Trudeau has today listened to Canadians and abandoned a timeline that was not workable. Any resettlement plan must allow for the full integration of refugees as welcomed members of Canadian society.

“Last January our Conservative Government announced a commitment to resettle an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees. Pursuant to that commitment, approximately 10,000 refugees had either been processed or were in the final stages of processing. That work gives the current government a tremendous head start in aiding Syrian refugees.

“Today’s announcement by the Liberals still leaves Canadians with many unanswered questions about plans for caring for refugees upon arrival, and specifically, the real costs of the plan, impacts on provincial governments, and the involvement of our Canadian Armed Forces.

“We believe it is also imperative that Canada stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the mission to degrade ISIS. We continue to call on the Liberal government to reverse its position and ensure the Royal Canadian Air Force remains engaged in the fight against ISIS.”
