Fert Banding question

Idea is good option if dealing with rut solution, and gives you field specific tool/options depending on extent of rut damage. I'd be trying to get nitrogen down and seed place dry...Pre-seed Harrowpacking and the "right" rain will help.... rut effects will still be there regardless but you can limit losses of bad situation.

Appreciate the input. A couple more details. Already have the fertilizer blends bought and in the bin. NH3 is certainly a good nitrogen option but at present not one I am considering. One thought I had was that when I seed canola in a single pass the fertilizer is only covered with about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of dirt. If I banded it in at 2-3 inches I thought there would be less chance of the nitrogen being gased off into the atmosphere. Also was wondering about timing of pre-seed burn? How many days after cultivation can you spray?

you would be way better off to spray before you cultivate. I would say banding is way way better than broadcast. Broadcast is a plan b.

Depends on severity of your rut situation and/or when you get at the field. No clean answer..too many variables..other than if cleaning up ruts is main issue, using sweeps will be more effective than spikes. Use them to your advantage when considering weed control. Steel still effective weed control.

One thing I remember from back in the day. Loosen stubble, depending on opener, when banding, and create problem for seeding. Depends on your stubble and your equipment for sure. Here, because of last fall, we have straw to fix before we could do either.

Don't put excess anhydrous close to your seed if it turns dry you will cry! Just a heads up from a big big loss year. Old drill back in the 80s when we started direct seeding. Nice kit you can buy to show where the gas is makes a pink colour.

This is not a crazy ideal to me Hamloc. I went from 10 years of zero till back to conventional. The hard rains since 2010 changed things where I have better luck with tillage now. I found my land was getting hardpan in places and also anaerobic. I still zero till areas of my land so it would not erode if water runs across it. I seen the difference very well this year.
Since I bought my own land roller I think I will roll some of my land before seeding canola where I will be leveling ruts.

I side band liquid with atom jets and also think putting the N a little deeper and father away would be better.

Sask3 go to your local Home Depot and buy a citrus tree fertilizer.

Spikes I think would work best to deep band fert fert and work out ruts , then follow up with heavy harrows or a coulter machine .
Unless you can get it broad cast and hit it aggressively with a vt machine of sorts .
