Any of you guys grow hay?

We did 600 ha and it was a exceptionally wet year and yielded 8t ha alas didn't make export grade we have premium export, export, domestic number one then graded dairy then beef. All how feed tests pan out.

Ranges from 200 per tonne down to about 140 .

Were on dometic/dairy so around 160 on farm but despite work load its quite good money gross margin wise.

Guess you guys have normal freight dramas and possibly no domestic markets???

We have numerous feedlots dairies and just run of the mill farms that require hay a lot of farmers locally the programme is centered around hay production 70% of there crop acres is hay.

Main issue is oats you are limited when it comes to weed control sometimes.

Main hay is oats then forage barley and oats mixed with vetch or pure vetch hay then wheat.

Most of wheat hay is usually a frosted crop knocked over for hay.

We have around 1200 acres of alfalfa grass mix hay but it is for our cow herd so it doesn't get sold. As for price $100 ton will buy pretty nice hay here. This year was exceptional for yield and it ran between 10-15 ton acre of silage. Hardly baled anything since it rained every day or three. Interesting to hear how you do it a half a world away.

We did a lot of hay in the past but were always challenged with quality and labour required to manage it properly.

We fed any lower quality hay to our cattle and that worked out pretty well.
Sold the hay land because it was not really suitable for crops.
