Is it really worth growing wht?

I grow durum as my main cereal, but have some thoughts about spreading out some risk and growing some wht. Last wht I grew was Pasteur!!
Had a huge crop, but very late to mature, atleast like durum maybe later. Haven't grown red wht for a number of years. There's some good looking high yielding varieties now that can come close to durum.
I'm afraid of fusarium getting worse, my area is so -so. Spraying did help last yr, but timing of seeding seems to be the trick.

Wheat.....the summerfallow of continuous cropping.

We had VB Shaw. Thought is was kinda susceptible to fusarium.
Now we have Cardale....don't mind it.
Expanding VB Jatharia seed for 2018 wheat crop...supposed to have better fusarium "resistance"(used loosely). Want to go back to midge resistant.

Too much wheat in the world? We got $6.70 for our HRSW...bet I won't get that for our durum....both yeilded about the same.

Thinking of Jatheria or Utmost, grew Shaw last, too much straw, big yield though.

I think Jatharia is going to be a taller variety too.

Not too many cereal options. Disease is kicking it in the value. Durum is too risky and malt is susceptible too. Don't like the odds in the malt lottery. Oats...over produce and give it away. Same as canary.

Maybe just hope for a year with some drier weather at flowering time.

Seed the whole thing to grass and start a goat ranch...goat eating ethnic population is increasing. If I wasn't past my "best before" date and not so lazy maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea!

AC Brandon , some Gus resistance , short , yields very well , stands excellent and combines very good. Even JD's can make a decent sample out of it .

seems like your breeders focus on yield not disease resistance same the world over more fungicide more fungicide grrrr

AC Brandon, yes even JDS do a great job in it. High yield and quality is good, disease is good.

Oats once you over produce you get years of low prices, is 2017 beginning that set up.


Malt is a total joke.

Durum is like Trudeau were just not ready to get back in that game.

so which hrsw is the best yielder with the best fus res. ? trying to find a replacement for unity , don't think titanium is going to be it ? May have to forget about the midge tolerance ?

There are no silver bullets..... the seed guide can drive you nuts trying to find a variety that isn't weak in some area. Pick your battle(s) and make a choice.

Brandon does look good in the Seed Guide but no seed grower has it in my area. Most seed growers only handle a couple varieties of wht, durum is king in the south. I would have to go to Tim buck two to find some.
