Is it really worth growing wht?

I have one year old Brandon , germ between 92 and 99. Have my own 5 in 1 gestel cleaner and clean for a couple guys. Different ways of making money. It's number one wheat so should grow number one .

I grow durum as my main cereal, but have some thoughts about spreading out some risk and growing some wht. Last wht I grew was Pasteur!!
Had a huge crop, but very late to mature, atleast like durum maybe later. Haven't grown red wht for a number of years. There's some good looking high yielding varieties now that can come close to durum.
I'm afraid of fusarium getting worse, my area is so -so. Spraying did help last yr, but timing of seeding seems to be the trick.

Timing of seeding means nothing. Timing of the rain, heavy dews and fog at flowering are what you want to predict. If you can do that I need access to your crystal ball. 2015 we seeded durum first at the end of April was a #1 cwad no rain at flowering. 5 miles north light rains #5 cwad. 2016 durum seeded April 25 had rain or dew evey day at flowering all sample. I'm switching to brandon and faller this year to give the wheat a chance. Maybe someday I'll grow durum again. If the Weather cooperates and I can average between 60-80 on the red wheat there's good profit. With way less risk. I'm not going to get the $10 plus durum prices but I'm hoping I can get a 1 or 2 grade with red wheat. Time will prove me right or wrong. As usual.

Agree casered - weather timing is the major factor. It would be far more worth while to have access to more accurate 30 day forecasts than pay for certain agronomy services that guess on future weather

couldn't agree more with that . seeded 2.5 bpa last year . comes in quicker also

so which hrsw is the best yielder with the best fus res. ? trying to find a replacement for unity , don't think titanium is going to be it ? May have to forget about the midge tolerance ?

Have had luck with Cardale but no midge resistance.
Utmost will be the variety we are leaning towards that is midge resistant.

I agree 2.5 bus or more, less tillers etc. Always seed thicker better results, comes in faster.

Utmost is MS for fuzz...All of ours graded Feed last yr..

Wakopa, how much have you pushed fertility with ac Brandon ? N specifically ?
This was our first year growing it, had it beside Carberry . Was 5 bus better with slightly better protein and held a better grade , 1 vrs 2.
I did not push fertility much as we were very dry in June and mid July.
By the looks of Brandon , fertility can be pushed a lot without much issue or ever relying on growth regulators .

I agree give it all you can won't lodge only where you accidentally double up and growth regulators not needed. Gave up on cardale carberry.

But wheat is a filler.

Next week wheat tour from Texas north depending on storms. Tornados yesterday Nashville St. Louis etc. Road boy known yet.
