A friend of mine bought a box of random junk for $1 at the city auction on the weekend. In the box was an interesting book called "Van Horne's Road" An illustratee account of the construction and first years of operation of the Canadian Pacific transcontinental railway by Omer Lavallee.
I flipped it open to see some really neat photos. I've attached a few images, sry about the quality of my smart phone pics.
The oldest known human fossil has been dated to be 2.8 million years old. If we think of human history as a 24 hour clock then the west was 'settled' in the last 4 seconds. Wild to think about it that way.
