What a crock Braveheart - when did the NFU ever have the power and political might to cost farmers more than the grain companies and railways combined? Or are you blaming the NFU for everything you perceive was wrong with the CWB?

The nfu has lots of liberal yuppyduppy city rooftop farmer types in it now but their core western members actually do know what's going on and are well versed in business and trade...


While I am an open market supporter, I agree with the statement that simply getting rid of the cwb so you can sell to the big three directly was a dumb reason to want the open market.


Our grain companies were poorly equipped to handle logistics and still have major issues with quality and salesmanship internationally.

I will always say there was room for both systems-CWB and open market. It might not have been so convenient for Single desk and it might not have had all the power, but the industry would have been better off. The Harper government just never followed up. Ritz either didn't quite have it or Harper didn't let him finish the job properly. Now when the PC's phone my house every frickin day, I tell them to take a hike.

Let's add up some of the damage:

Sided with the pools on changing the method of payment (WGTA benefit) wanting the benefit paid to railways instead of farmers. That's right, payrails instead of farmers. Talk about a crock. The result was an inefficient rail system and the loss of cattle feeding anywhere much but AB.

Fought to preserve the two price wheat system which resulted in a mass exodus of domestic flour mills. Our best market is the one closest but the NFU wisdom was to punish them with prices that made them uncompetitive to point that leaving was the best idea.

In the nineties there was interest in on farm milling, anything to pickup farm fortunes. But no, the NFU saw farmers wanting tp process their own grain as "cherry picking" and depriving the pool account of their due.

Around the same time period there was interest in apasta plant for SK. Again, the NFU saw this as only another assault on their precious central desk marketer.

During the railway turmoil of the late nineties, there was an opportunity to put the railways on a commercial footing with the accountability that a commercial, contractual system would bring, but the NFU opposed that of course and unwittingly played into the plans of the railways through the Estey/Kroeger circus.

Of course the CWB argument is there and to me it's still hard to believe that a farm group would applaud when some farmers went to jail for trying to market their own property against an unjust law.

Has there ever been a time when longshoreman or dock workers were on strike that the NFU rushed to demand back to work legislation? I don't remember one..

I'm pretty sure that back in the day the NFU would have been in opposition of the building of Weyburn Inland Terminal.

There's just a pattern of constant subterfuge. It's like they want to be farming villains of their TV counterparts, KAOS, SPECTRE, THRUSH, Dr. Evil, etc.

Yeah, but lets face it as you folks always point out the NFU is a joke - no members, no support, lunatic fringe, nobody listens to them. Yet suddenly they have apparently single handedly dictated agricultural policy on the prairies for 50 years. Make up your mind - you can't have it both ways.

Sounds like Braveheart speaks from personal experience from back in the day.
I've heard enough stories from elders to believe.
I took their survey. Answered truthfully that I have not had one single problem with a buyer. Other than board.
To me, still sad the socialists wont take any responsibility.
Anyway, I'm getting tired of the same stuff from the same suspects. Keeping my mouth shut and ignoring their brawl just easier.

Come on Braveheart we all know you belonged to the WCWGA for many years, so of coarse your going to blame the NFU for any failed programs. We had Harper and Ritz Cracker in power for 4 1/2 years the WCWGA had their ears. We also had Mulroney in power for 8 years with Charlie as Ag Minister, again the WCWGA had thiers ears. Harper and Ritz Cracker got rid of the CWB with no backup plan in order , that's why shipping is so screwed up.

So to blame the NFU, is stretching it a bit, their are many to blame for the failures. I would say the biggest is that farmers can't agree on anything, that's why nothing gets done. Way to many different farm groups
