Had a carbed 30hp Koehler on an auger. Stupid engine had the canister air filter and intake higher up exposed to the elements. Cold weather kit provided was not durable as it was a flimsy flex pipe sucking hot air off exhaust manifold. An afterthought by the look of it. It would freeze up all the time even with the crank vent hose removed. I would hoard it in for the day with a heavy old coat so it would hopefully start next morning. Came back next morning to a smouldering heap of shit. I was never that happy to see something I owned burn up. Replaced with a 27 hp Koehler with a low set intake and actual cold weather kit. Thing seems like it ended up having the same power as the other and no trouble starting. I always reroute the vent on the top of the engine away from the air intake. Even an old bin door or plywood beside the engine seems to bounce enough heat back too. Far as the hydraulics being stiff a little kerosene helps but it’ll find every poor seal when it warms up.

Just live with it, apply some choke till load comes on. Warm doesn't help, same in summer. Still starting fine in minus 20 something. Always use a thicker Ziploc bag to partially cover fan intake, keeps engine warmer. Main trouble was the crankcase vent tube. Guess we are DESTROYING the CLIMATE with POLUTION!

Funny how all the troubles stem back to the crank vent. The newer Deere tractors have a vent filter setup which when cold out freezes off. Think these have been removed to stop over pressuring the engine. Granted it does stop oil loss on the blow by but not suitable in sub artic conditions.

I assume that you guys with the kohlers have the winter kit on that sucks warm air from around the exhaust. You may also have to wire on more tin around the exhaust so that it can suck warmer air. On my kohler 40 hp I had to take electric tape and close off part of the air cleaner. It wants to suck cold air from one spot plus a little warm air from the muffler in its original state. If you wrap the 1 part of the air cleaner with electrical tape it will suck all its air from around the warm muffler. I have had no troubles with the 3 kohlers that I have once I got them using warm air from around the muffler. Had to tweak them a little to get them warm enough. I loads lots at -30.
