SARM Resolution on protection of property?

Soooo....If you are snooping around my property in the middle of the night, and my dog takes a chunk out of your arse, would my dog be in trouble with the law?

Hubnuts.. Never have thought of this problem solving solution like that; but perhaps this is the solution for some people.

A couple of comments though....first ; distance yourself from any admission that it is "my" dog. Better that the ******* moved in unannounced; without your consent, permission or any aid from your farm business. Maintain they don't seem to like you; they are next to wild animals that maybe have a right to their own ways ; are not in any way a pet and are sustained by any food they steal or seem to acquire without asking through written requests; and similarly the shelter they seem to have solely taken over. Any help to make their lives easier can be explained on humanitarian type grounds. After all no one should believe in animal cruelty. Like all Earth Rangers know.....something about loving ALL animals.

In short you have no ties to those dogs. Don't try to deduct occasional bribes or dog treats such as dog food from your income tax. On audit that won't stand up anyways.

Come to think of it...over the years the odd neighbor has had a couple of the meanest critters on their property that they seemingly were at wits end on how to dispose of them. It was effective in keeping EVERYONE away.

Maybe keep a more friendly cat or other pet separately. Move to where the fire department and police respond in minutes. Live in that gated community; security wire that house like Trump Tower; or any provincial government crown corp building etc. You can't legally harbor a viscious animal there.

The world is changing fast; and their are many who see the countryside as their own that can be used and abused in any manner that crosses their self centered minds....No respect for "rights" of others.

If crime is a problem in your area there are a number of practical things you can do to prevent it. Video survelliance cameras and game cameras strategically placed around the farm yard will give criminals a strong deterrent plus give you evidence which can be used to convict. Alarm systems on your shop, house and storage sheds. Dogs.

Don't leave any machinery out in full view near the road. For yard sites that are not lived in, a sign at the entrance saying there are hidden spike belts do not enter. You don't need to actually use them or use them all the time as most would be thieves won't bother looking for them.

In 1976 ago some thieves robbed a fall supper out in Sedley just SE of Regina. A couple of guys from the supper organizers decided to chase after them. It ended badly as the would be heroes were shot dead.

In another incident a neighbor confronted some guys out hunting without permision, there were some words exchanged and threats with a gun made. This is a dangerous situation to best be avoided.

In both cases does it make sense to confront armed intruders or thieves? I would say no. It is best to let them go. Try to identify them and their vehicles and report it to the police. Is your life worth a few hundred dollars or some fuel or a tresspass?

The other risk is that you will end up over reacting and shooting someone like a local kid who as many kids do, gets into trouble. Do you really want that hanging over you for the rest of your life? Even the Cops suffer from PTSD when shootings occur.

Obviously if you are being physically attacked and self defense is your only option that is a different situation. But confronting thieves or vandals for property crime is probably not worth it.

I'll defend myself and the safety of the family but stolen stuff can be replaced.

When personal confrontation and aggression are part of the encounter.... it becomes a different story and I bet that is what the resolution is aimed at.

BE IT RESOLVED that SARM lobby the federal government to expand the rights and justification for an individual to defend or protect himself,herself and person under care and property.

Farma I think it is a vague resolution, but property has been added at the end. This makes the intent of the resolution to offer more protection to people who use excessive force while protecting property. I doubt that most SARM delegates have a good understanding the laws in this area. Resolutions of this kind which don't spell out what they specifically plan to lobby for are kind of useless. This will never pass scrutiny in Canada.

And I also think it won't really help, as most sensible people won't bother confronting those who commit property crime. It is rare to catch anyone in the act. Most thieves have figured out not to commit crime while you are around. How many guys have the time to be guarding their property? Install an alarm system and video surveilance that is much better use of your time and money.

Mexico has been dealing with security issues for a long time. About 15 years ago, a grain broker and a Mexican marketing family invited us to their operations. Jose, the broker met us in San Antonio and we flew to Mex City from there. When we arrived at the airport in Mexico City, everything became focussed on our security, no going to washroom alone, Jose peeled out $20 to pay some peon to go with us, no going to Duty-free shop. The hotel we stayed at first night was owned by the marketing family we were visiting. It cost $300 US a night, so none too shabby. We were warned not to leave our room and never open the door to a knock. We went to the Mercado in the morning, where long rows of markets are stocked overnight only to be emptied by 1:00 the next day. Semis of melons, flowers, meat, fish, grain, all gone by noon. They preeched security the whole time as they all knew of neighbours, friends with children kidnapped, ears sent to parents in boxes, cars gobbled up by big semis.

Then we were taken to Guadalehara and Queretero where their homes, markets and factories were. On the way there we saw 70-100 miles of open farmland with a few stripped tractors sitting around. Story was, no use planting because it would all be stolen before you could harvest. The streets leading to their homes had huge boulders planted in them so no one came or left in a hurry. We approached their yard which was surrounded by 12 foot concrete wall topped with 6 feet of electrified barbed wire. A thick steel gate electrically opened and we were greeted by a guard with a machine gun. Another guard appeared and they took control of two full-grown Dobermans. We entered the large bungalow and stepped past a creek running through the living room with a fruit tree growing out the roof. The house had in the centre a concrete safe room where they also prayed. The nice wife had never golfed with anyone but the body guard and the daughter was homeschooled because of security. We weren't sure we would ever see our family again.

When they returned the visit to Canada, it was about 35 below. The drifting at the farm looked worse than the Sahara Desert. They couldn't even get out to take pictures. But they were surprised to see no walls, no locks, no dogs, no nothing, probably no money either.

Agree with Chuck2. No damn way I'd bother a methhead over property. BUT! Over time inches become miles.
