So when and how do you guys start planting.

I was never in Canada at start of planting always sort of towards the end.

But never asked a lot of questions.

Obviously snow has to melt and water vanish so you can get on fields.

Does ground have to be above a certain temp or you can sow and it will stay dormant until ground warms up?

And weeds geez its not like oz were you can wait a week if paddock is weedy, like here will give it dose of glypho and come back and seed 10 days later wereas you guys with narrow time frame haven't got that luxury.

And guys with crop out very few I know but they will be palnting and harvesting same time this year??

yep some of those questions are dumb.

And is treflan avadex yield dual gold boxer gold any of those used pre plant right in front of seeder??

Usually may 1 for us. Snow is gone for a while and tree lines have none then we can get ready. Right now water running and frost still in the ground. Once its out the land gets soft for about a week then machinery can go on it. But usually may 1 any time we seeded earlier it was a shit crop.

      Never a dumb question
Seeding dates are all over the map here
Depending on the spring some will start the end of April and there are those who wait till after the 15th May , a few even later.
Larger producers tend to start earlier, smaller producers tend later and everything in between .
Some wait to do burn off , some do burn off after seeding.
We don't set a date , but most years by the first week of May the soil is warmed up to 5c or so. Good enough to start wheat or peas.
Agree with S/F , we have tried before May 1st - never good . But 8 miles south , or 10 miles NW , different story.
You go north or NE 10 to 15 miles , usually a week behind us .
South West Alberta will start soon. Southern Manitoba and Sw Sask usually next up.
As far as "too early" ..... well usually 2 days before your neighbours lol.
Anything seeded after the 25th May becomes risky. After June 1st can be a death sentence. Although both can turn out good , and has , but odds are not in your favour . In the south it can be heat blast , here it can be early frost.
Yes trifuralin / edge is making a come back before seeding.
9-10 years there is a 10-14 day optimal seeding window , trick is to hit it .
Some years it's May 1 to May 15 other years it's 10 - 25 and the very odd time later .
If you can get er in between May 5 and May 25 your usually fine in most of Sask.

The snow that's left here isn't dry enough to burn but I might try it next year. I will have to blow or doze a fire guard so it doesnt get away....oh ya and don't forget to call the controlled burn hotline...last thing you need is the fire department showing up and getting billed for something that's under control.

                  Too funny, farmaholic!

Maybe try a snow fence. You could use it as kindling to get those fields to burn like a Salem witch.

I would say here in general. North of brown soil zone. As soon as you can get on it! Winter is always coming, mallee.

Lentils are always first in the ground. We always hope to be cutting them by August 15 ish. They withstand quite a bit of spring frost but none in fall. The ground is moist and germination will not be an issue. We've been lucky that first fall frosts have stayed away until mid-Sept but we have seen earlier frosts in prior years. Some years, we have a touch of frost even every summer month.

Still wanna trade growing seasons? One thing is, we don't have any poisonous snakes - only politicians.

dont you hard to kill grass weeds in crops meaning you don't have tie to wait for them to 100% germinate before planting so they miss the knock down / burn off spray and cause issues in crop?

This was yesterday on Worked last fall ground vs stubble.

I would say its a little early plus mud in field to get to dry spot and water still running as last of the snow goes away.

                          Snow geese arrived yesterday.

Snow geese are here too helping out with spring harvest. Some quarters look about half done already
