cropping choices...

By now I would think most seeding plans would be made but not cast in stone. No one is 100% committed until the seeds in the ground and even then Ma Nature can change your mind.

So what are you going to do? Chase falling stars or try to pick what will be the next brightest shining star? Two years ago yellow mustard hit 60cents..now a bit over 30. Small and large green lentils were a good price for 16/17 production, what about this year? Which peas to grow, yellow or green? Yellow/golden flax fetched a real good premium over brown at one point this marketing year...too many acres of yellow and watch the premium evaporate.

Nothing out of the ordinary being seeded here. Grow the niche market crops when they're cheap and no one else wants to and hopefully those dim stars will shine bright the following marketing year.

How do you grow canola organically?


Just curious ... there has to be a way to avoid some of these outrageous costs....and still make money conventionally.

One fellow close to here started seeding lentils yesterday.

Canola and soybean acres going through the roof. Likely see sub 10's/bu come fall. Your right I think the yellow vs brown flax spread is going the way of the dodo. Mustard not an option for most. HRSW acres going up Durum acres going down. There needs to be a 1.50 spread minimum to make durum the choice over HRS in my eyes. Its hardly a penny these days especially when the almost mandatory 'cleaning' is factored in. Lentils well many have their tails between their legs from last year. The lentil growing region has become more muddied in more ways than one. Canary seed who the hell keeps birds anymore? Unless its Angry Birds on your smartphone? Barley market you got to wonder how much 'feed' is actually in the beer your drinkin. Hemp thats an interesting one but with a pile of new hemp acres in the US will the market bear it.

I can almost hear the ole tune, "Your fault Mr.Farmer! Don't you know diversification?".

Just a fun fact one bushel of barley produces 333 bottles of beer. At LB pricing thats nearly $1000 a bushel.

It is 66 loaves last I heard. At $9/ bu( what they pay for our $6),=0.13/loaf, to farmer /peasant.
Most at store $2-4 / loaf, = 3.2% of retail, is the value of the Raw wheat.
And with out the wheat you have an empty plastic bag! or a pile of unpronounceable additives, mostly SUGAR!

How do you grow canola organically?

I don't grow canola. I watch the neighbors. Last year there was 2500 acres around me where farmers planted every acre of their farm to canola. What happens this year? In the bigger picture, if 46% of acres are planted to canola the math tells me that crop rotation has gone out the window for the sake of cash flow. It is working, there were very good crops and those guys did well.
Organic prices have fallen pretty bad, so you guys are not the only ones getting a haircut these days. It's going to get interesting!!!
