    Buried Canola

400 acres L140p buried a solid 3/4-1" deep from the wind storm. Is it going to survive?

No problems or issues there. The soil is light , fluffy, not compacted.
If you had a driving rain that packs it then hot and windy to dry it quick and crust it - that's a problem.
I'd rather not have rain after seeding canola, for the crusting and the washing of furrows over the seed burning it deep, say 11/2 deep

Unless it bakes you are good seeding 1.5, dont listen to experts. Have a beer.

****in useless gale force winds. Absolutely no good comes from them. Wind has done more damage here that I care to think about. Bins, shingles, swaths, soil erosion, my aged leathery face.... it disturbs my peace of mind and serenity!

Our ground held tight...maybe a wee bit of dusting off, some better dirt not far from here that was rolled canola stubble was going pretty hard.

          big L,

I think what your trying to show is soil drifted over emerged canola in the cotyledon stage. I would be very concerned.

Heavy durum stubble that was half lodged and tough when we combined. Lemkined around the headlands and thought the heavy harrows did a good enough job in fall and was wrong. Couldn't clear the trash on 12" spacing no matter which angle I tried so burnt it black. Never going black again!!! Should have been all Lemkined in fall or even this spring.

That is one sad situation. Does the stem have enough energy to push those leaves through an inch of soil, if the roots have the moisture it may happen. I think a rain could be the worst thing to happen in the near future. Mother nature is always full of surprises!

that's the shits big lentil, we had that happen 20 yrs ago and have never left it exposed again . nothing more sickening than watching your land blow away. had to use the truck compass to get out of field . it's just too risky . sure it dries quicker and prob less disease , but I won't take the chance again . lots of people talk pretty loosely on here about burning . not for us ! Hope it comes thru ok for you . ours got cut right off that time . worse thing is once it starts it sure blows easy . lots of the fire bugs here were happy to see the rain , dirt was blowing on burnt fields at 8 this morning already . and we aren't dry ! Hope it rains for you . f&$king raining here and we're only about 20% done . what a f$&King country.

Set the drill as shallow as it will go, back packing pressure right off and knock the dust out of the furrow without hurting canola. Im dumb and crazy enough to try it tomorrow morn. I should be able to get lined up.

That's a shame Big L. I don't know if your shallow drill pass will work, but I am concerned for your crop. Suffocation is a real possibility.

I'm just relating back to when I was 12 years old doing summerfallow with the JD 820 and a Glencoe cultivator. When the teeth were worn and didn't cut off all the weeds, the small ones that got buried didn't survive.

                          Hope your canola fares better.

I was in dream land last night, the blow dirt depth is far too variable, some spots its only covering plants by an 1/8th. Two options wait n see or go straight into reseed.

We had canola two years ago came up nice then got pounded with hail and buried it . Had to reseed it all on pea stubble. Left a strip and it was not great at all , too thin and weed control later was an issue
You may be in a different situation biglentil if it is not packed hard . That's a tough call , no right or wrong there
