Too bad we couldn't swap conditions to average things out... wishful silly thinking.

We all think the grass is "greener" SOMEPLACE ELSE. And it may be, but the land is taken and NOT for sale, or EXPENSIVE!

Lots of canola yet to seed here. Floaters are going flat out. Substandard way to fertilize it. Harrowing into mud.
Its a successful weed but likely no bumper this year. Some will be desperate to make their payments. Rent on wet ground.
30 bu canola still better than feed barley. Greenfeed a fail these days.

Not enough livestock around and potentially large hay crop coming to make for a glut of feed. What some want for greenfeed on Kijiji you can't see there being any money in it. Hay prices stay up more so but getting up quality hay is a fight. I don't know about you guys but barley doesn't yield any better than wheat or sometimes canola. You guys that aren't pleased with sub 80 bushel barley I envy you lol

The simple reality with feed barley is that at todays prices I cant afford to harvest it no matter yield. My fixed costs higher than that not to mention harvest and storage.

IMO this is why canola has become the darling of western Canada. This is the only crop that will make enough gross income to lay for all the stuff necessary to farm. Canola wheat canola rotation and/or canola winter canola rotations around here. I see this as an act of desperation, not an act of sound farming. If clubroot sets in, it's broom and shovel time for a lot of farms. I understand this is not a problem at this time but the tight canola rotations are getting stupid. Who is to blame? The market that won't pay for cereals or the farmer for not growing cereal grains profitably?

Hobbyfarmer is bang on. Not sure how you change it though. Our area is best suited to barley but as BP says, it's unprofitable. Story from feeders this winter was they were well covered, didn't book much ahead and low balled price. Last week I had 3 brokers call scrambling for barley to cover contracts but still won't pay for it? Someone must be willing to grow it for nothing.

For every 10 farms there will be 10 different cost structures. I know several who grow feed. I know many who plant malt with a dont givadarn attitude. I believe looking for someone to bear fault is a box canyon. If we want our jobs in the future lets help kick science in the butt. More crops, smarter crops, unique crops. Screw barley. Anybody can grow a few bushels. Few can profit. Let them.

Original post. Canola yields could yet average. Seeded acres not so likely in the canola belt.

And here we would be discounted on feed barley because of freight to where its needed! Then throw in the the infamous "vomi" and hogs can't eat much of it.

Got to wonder what this winter's canola market will look like, I can tell you that our crop already has been reduced, droughtish, frost, stranded seeds, bugs and I think all the rain in the world won't make up for lost potential due to the shitty start its getting.
