A lot of things would change if balanced budgets were the law.

Timing is everything. The loss of revenue from big oil. Alberta was screwed no matter who was elected. In Sask, Wall came in on an upswing in the economy, oil and grain were going up. If he had lost he last election, the change would have been blamed on whoever was elected.

Well, SF#....it wasn't the ND's who wrecked Alberta...actually, we are doing better than I thought we would..and are on track for leading the country in GDP growth...the Cons left the coffers empty, infra structure behind and cronies in high paid jobs ..but, I guess I really don't expect you to see any of that ....

Certainly don't like it...however, believe no matter who hadn't gotten in, it would be near that, already on way with Prentice....but how do you explain coffers being bare, infrastructure needing major work, high paid cronies in departments, corps not paying royalties and tax? And , this when we were "high rollers"....sorry, corruption doesn't cut it..

Government spending is a component of GDP making the stat meaningless. It is hard to place a value on government activity so most is included at cost. I doubt AB will hit 3% growth as all forecasters are expecting oil prices to rise but they have not done so yet. I doubt we will see $100 oil again until after 2020.

agree ajl . . . Canada's GDP released this morning at 3.7% annualized, but almost entirely supported by Fed government debt spending. It's a ticking economic bomb . . . .

NDP would be more of the same. Debt would keep on climbing and taxes would be through the roof - sending remaining profitable companies running to the US. Too much a touchy/feely party. Don't have the intestinal fortitude to slash and gut spending. That is the responsibility of the Conservative party.
