Railway costing review

Have just been reading newsletter from Sask Wheat Development Commission.
Says railway costing review would greatly inform the grain transport reform process.
Have seen warnings that review could result in higher revenue entitlement for railways.
May be what is needed to encourage investment.

It seems when they consolidated the rail and grain industry back in the late 80s there was talk of better efficiencies coming from that....never happened.

The proof....1997 and 2013.

The system is ****ed and will remain that way no matter how much the railways are given....it's wealth redistribution.

How about allowing graincos to order cars as contracts are signed....

How about getting the concretes to 134 car spots so the highways quit getting ****ed. A railway costs less than using highways.

Why are the grain cos not building the storage?

Actual penalties to someone for late delivery.

Have the grain cos signed service agreements?

What about extending the load times at elevators....seems stupid to work for 24 hours straight only to have the cars sit for 4 days.

How about Brad recognise that building railcars is a growth industry not one to be sold off.

Grain co wont build storage what for,let the farmer buy bins sigh a contract then take no delivery for thirty or more days don't cost them anything call you when they have train coming give you a week to get it in dump in pit load on train no handling win win for them!!

Yes well let's see how that works for them on a short crop...might see indicators of that already...some farmers with deep pockets will get their storage investment back....

Can remember many years ago when Saskatchewan Wheat Pool members were asked by wheat board friendly management to defer collecting patronage refund money in order to finance building of a west coast terminal. Pool went ahead saying it was in interest of all prairie grain growers
With change in grower thinking on co-operative and board marketing, it is less likely to see that happen today.
We are warned about a repeat of 2013 rail shipping capacity situation and also prospect of higher rail rates.
Governments have unenviable task.

Sawfly, why do you say the grain co's love it when the RR's can't deliver? The co's make money on turnover not sitting on it in storage. The co's pay the demurrage if they can't move the grain to port, not you and i as in the past.

When the railroads can't move as much grain as the farmers want to sell, the elevators raise their basis levels. The elevators still move exactly the same amount of grain as they normally do. They simply make a LOT MORE MONEY!!

The consolidation of railways and elevators in the 80s was based on the previous 60 years....no one was looking forward 20 years to the changes happening like continuous cropping and a different crop mix.

Look at your local input supplier....more fertilizer plants and no one was building infrastructure for higher production.

The system isn't moving a million tonnes a week....sort of caps the exports at a maximim of 52 mmt....when production trend lines are moving quite a bit higher than that with a far more diversified crop mix than 30 years ago.

Pretty sad no one is thinking forward other than to say "build bins at the farm"

It doesn't get the grain to a moveable position ....and when you are export dependant it's a really poor strategy.

The co's raise their basis because they can't move the product at times. It's a signal, DON'T SELL. Wouldn't you do the same if you were in the same position as the co's?
